Preach Not How Mr X Likes Kuntaur Imam Warns Islamic Council By Kebba Y Drammeh
Imam of Kuntaur in Central River region warns Supreme Islamic Council (SIC) to preach in accordance with the teachings of the Holy Quran and the Prophet (pbuh) and not how Mr X or Y likes.
Imam Jallow was speaking in the context of the recent row between a renowned scholar Imam Ba-Kawsu Fofana and SIC over whether or not Gambia should observe Ramadan the same day with Saudi Arabia.
Critical of the council’s decision for Gambians to ‘do as Mecca’, Imam Ba-Kawsu has been reprimanded by both the council and president eventhough some Gambians, as well, defied.
Imam Jallow described SIC’s action as putting the cart before horse, saying Mecca and The Gambia are not in the same geographical set-up, thus not advisable fast the same day.
Islamic Council president Imam Touray had said the decision to follow Mecca is based on the consent of Muslim elders, including those in the rural regions, but Imam Jallow disagrees.
"Let them create a debate on this issue," he told Daily News. "Infact I want to sit with the president and explain to him where SIC has gone wrong"
Jallow also raises eyebrows on the council’s president remark that those who defied them should fast one more day.
"This is an unfair comment," he says. "The prophet advises us to look for the crescent on the 29th day of the month and if we do not see it fast the next day."
On the proposed change of prayer times the Imam says, it will not be accepted by his mosque so long as he remains the Imam.
