DailyNews Editorial: Bribery is a Maraudor of Intergrity
Bribery is increasingly marauding the integrity of professionals and institutions in The Gambia. If one conduct a survey, it would be realised that there is already a solid foundation for what is believed to be a taff-taff economy in the country; believing that one has to deceitfully work smart as a substitute to working hard so as to make a living at the expense of others.
There are many people involving in the offering and receiving of money and gifts as a way of influencing the conduct of public officers and think that it is a normal practice, because of the misconception of mandat (tip) in society.
Bribery is a form of corruption is an act implying money or gift given that it alters the behavior of the recipient. Bribery constitutes a crime and is offering, giving, receiving, or soliciting of any item of value to influence the actions of an official or other person in charge of a public or legal duty.
The bribe is the gift bestowed to influence the recipient’s conduct. It may be any money, good, right in action, property, preferment, privilege, emolument, object of value, advantage, or merely a promise or undertaking to induce or influence the action, vote, or influence of a person in an official or public capacity.
If we will not allow our nation to be in a comma in terms of development, we have to do away with bribery as a people.
For example, bribing security personnel, medical practitioners, judicial officers, educationists, journalists etc will enshroud and deepen lapses of the essential developmental sectors of our society.
Accepting bribery as a culture in this country will only earn us a crying embarrassment in the full glare of the whole world which will no doubt mock our relevance as a nation.
If we don’t want to bend the trajectory curve towards self-destruction, let bribery not be our culture. The right culture we have is to live by the sweat of our brows. That is the best culture.
And if bribery is done away with no mangled wrecks of development would come our way, as bribery is the main foundation of other bigger ugly headed forms of corruption.
