Interesting article by Jollofnews:

EDITORIAL: NEA Director snubs JollofNews for being ‘critical of government’

For those who continue to deny Gambia government’s incessant prejudice towards divergent views, especially the independent media, here is a classical tale.

Just about last week, our reporter in Banjul was told by the Director of the National Environment Agency, Momodou B Sarr, that he would not grant him interview because “Jollof News is critical of the Gambia government.” Mr Sarr said that after the publication of an interview we had with him, some time back last June, he was advised against ever talking to us given our orientation towards the government’s policies.

That story, ‘Gambia's environment boss on US Oil spill,’ did generate some discussion among our readers; not that any of those comments were in anyway critical of the government – and even if they were, whatever is critical about the article itself, anyway? Besides, is that not what we are supposed to be doing, debating on national issues?

We only brought this up because some one commented somewhere here, condemning us for ignoring what they felt were positive news about the country and only opening our “filthy big mouths making statements,” while “Jammeh is making actions…”

Presumably, acts such as the ones that aim at intimidating perceived opponents of the regime, like the arrest of female gender activists on fraudulently concocted charges, are what we must be supportive of to be seen as not critical.

By the way, what makes Mr Sarr think we must be supportive of the government for him to grant us interview? Or what makes him think we can not write without having him or some other self-seeking sellouts like him talk to us?

When a government feels it is beyond censure it leaves limited choices for its people. The most popular approach of such a government is refusal to recognize the independent media. This is the situation the Gambian government has the country’s media in today.

And those with less faith ditch their pride; which explains why they will stop at nothing to safeguard their positions, even if they know what they are doing go against the principles of truth.
Well, we are not among those. And we will expose anyone who attempt to do so at our expense.

The society needs to know these people, so that tomorrow they can’t seek to hide behind unfounded excuses.
