The people, have spoken through their representatives. Parliament is introducing a law that should clamp down on individuals and sinister organizations trying to destroy the fundamentals of our society with dangerous drugs and other vicious acts that deny citizens of their freedoms and property.

This should be a very, very, welcomed development and one'd hope that unlike the politically motivated cases; drug traffickers, rapist and armed robbers will be dealt with to the letter of the law. they should payoff their debts to society in a swift and quick manner without long and undue legal haggling.

Thumbs up to those who championed this timely and long overdue law.

Unfortunately, they left out serial and vicious pedophiles who most people believe should be subjected to chemical castration upon conviction.

However, one would hope that they clearly define what constitute rape to ensure that people accused of such crimes are given adequate representations to prevent an abuse of process.

Sorry Prince - I couldn't and would never support the death penalty for anything. I just don't believe that anyone should have the power to take another's life. Life in jail - ok. But then prison needs to help reform - not just be a punishment.

I agree Lily. To me death penalty is crime itself. I do support certain criminals like pedophile, rapist get life with no parole and make sure they suffer during their imprisonment. For murderers, it depending on the case, there should be rehabilitation and parole.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

I understand where you are coming from Lily, i use to be against the capital punishment too... it all stopped when i moved into the real world and saw the luxury commercial drug dealers and other criminal elements are living in... and i compared it to the numerous babies they subject to crack addiction and the death like conditions their activities sentence ordinary people to by the minute.

When I realized that drug addicts regularly kill fathers and mothers of babies for $40, it became easier for me accept that the people who profit most from this trade should face the ultimate punishment.

Gambia introduces death penalty for drug possession

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-11489200

The Gambia has introduced harsher penalties against drug crime, including execution for anyone found holding more than 250g of cocaine or heroin.

Attorney General Edward Anthony Gomez said the move was aimed at curbing drug trafficking.

The country has recently become a key transit point from Latin America.

At least two tonnes of cocaine with a street value estimated at $1bn (about £675m) were seized in the West African nation in June, bound for Europe.

Even that doesn't make me change my view (as terrible as it is). Imprisonment. Better law enforcement. Anything. But not the right to take another life.
