Sulayman Secka, the Public Relations Officer of the Gambia Police Force, said from 1 October, the country’s various security agencies would jointly start implementing the anti-public smoking act, PANA reported from here Thursday. Secka made the announcement while addressing a press conference organized by the police force in collaboration with the country’s social and health department, along with other anti-tobacco bodies.
Gambian Parliament in July 1998 enacted anti-public smoking law, which was later signed by President Yahya Jammeh in September of the same year.
The law, among other things, banned tobacco-smoking in public places and also defined what is meant by public place as well as penalties for those found wanting.
Even though the law was passed over a decade ago, it is yet to be implemented and many people continue to openly puff tobacco products about in many public places like schools, cars and markets in the Gambia.
