For whatever Halifa is worth, I believe this principle is not going to be compromised. This lies at the core of what Halifa has sacrificed all these years. This also represents a constituency that has a strong and large following. (Rene )
Beautifully put Rene. You have honestly define the man and what he stand for. Count me among the constituency represented by this principle. If humankind everywhere strive towards this endeavour the world will be a better place. Thanks you very much.
Baldeh allow me time to get back to you. I am a bit tied up at the moment.
Shaka, this is exactly where Halifa is losing some ground support among people who had stood with him.
I repeat the quote here just for emphasis:
"He said that he will not preside over the tyrany and poverty of the Gambian State, neither will he help anyone to preside over the tyrany and poverty of the Gambian state".
Shaka, are the Gambian people living in poverty now and ain't they being ruled by tyranny as we speak????
In fact by stalling what most Gambians see as the most feasible method of removing the current regime (opposition unity) or forcing them to respect rule of law, isn't Halifa indirectly presiding and helping this regime continue to oppress the Gambian people? The samething he acused Diaspora Gambians of doing.
I'm not saying he is directly helping them but the unintended consequencies of their actions indicates that is exactly what the results of inflexibility is going to yield.
Does Shaka and Halifa reasonably believe that the Jammeh goernment would be better than any government led by any of the current opposition leaders?
Shaka, this is where I think Halifa is making a grave mistake. There is no guarantee that any government he helps come to power will in fact not oppress the Gambian people - as African leaders have a history of power greed. Only history can judge that...
There is additionally no iota of certainty that a government formed by a unity of the opposition is going to oppress the Gambian people more than they are oppress right now.
My humble take on this particular sticky point is that by refusing to show flexibility on certain principles and as a result holding the whole process ransom - the opposition leaders are indirectly helping Jammeh stay in power even longer.
This is the fundamental difference I observed between how dire Diaspora Gambians see the situation in the Gambia AND how the oppposition leaders are responding to the situation.
Shaka, Gambians are and have been oppressed, they live in poverty more today than any other time. The situation cannot be more urgent for Halifa and others.
I am definitely stunned on the unintended consequencies of the opposition leaders and their lack of understanding of what is at Stake. |
