The world renowned singer already owns a major private media group in Senegal Senegalese pop star Youssou N'dour has officially launched his own television station in Senegal after a two-year struggle with the authorities.
The singer already owns a major private media group in Dakar, which tends to be critical of the authorities.
The new channel, TFM, is officially a cultural one, after the authorities refused to grant him a licence for a general channel, correspondents say.......

He is a great musician. And he has a right to advocate his ideas. It is great for him to have a cultural/music channel. However, when he enters to the broadcasting for general, news, documentary, he is in dirty business. That would be a risk for his reputation he has built. He would earn lots of enemies, he would be put under pressure for what he is broadcasting. It is risky business. |

I have no idea what you mean with dirty business, Turk. He is far from a naive pop star and has already had his share of controversies with powerful people in Senegal, I am convinced that he knows what he puts his hands in.
By the way, I managed to make my dvd player work and watched the documentary once again. It brings one to lively Dakar as well as Gambia in the 70´s, Cairo, Fez and Touba, and gives an insight into his family life in a way never made visible before.

Dirty business is politics. He is a great musician, but once he starts having broadcasting in general areas like 'religion', 'politics', 'moral values', he hast to make a choice and and these choices could never satisfy everyone. Any criticism of government, religion, cultural values could disturb many people. As a musician he is well respected and his share of controversies are limited to its influence area. Now he will want to use its power in politics too. Once he attempts to expand his influence area, he will get reaction. All I am saying is that, he is taking risk. |

Turk, Youssou is not your average musician as you like them. He's got brain! Smart enought to take a stand even when controversial. You remember Oprah and Bruce Springsteen endorsing Obama? That's integrity! Why do you think anything that has to do with politics is unhealthy? It makes no sense at all! |

Senegambia, sorry you don't get my point. And what you post did not make sense. I never said he is average musician. I am not questioning his ability. His brain. I am not questioning his integrity. I have never said that anything with politics is unhealthy. Based on what you are telling me all these. What is wrong with you? Can't you get it? Geeeez. I am just saying he is into a area, politics where he would have to face lots of enemy where he did not have to face when he was making his music. Capish!!!! |

Heard of the saying that "if you can't take the heat get out of the kitchen"? Atleast Youssou has demonstrated that he can take the heat... No wonder he is successful |

Yossou is a UN Ambassdor who already owns Media Outlets in Dakar including a Radio station. He is more than capable of running a TV Channel. Go Youssou! Go Youssou!
