MY WORLD IMAGES 2010 contemporary arts festival
Location København · Århus · Odense · Aalborg · Roskilde · Thisted · Skørping · Frederikshavn · Helsingør · Rungsted kyst · Frederiksberg · Gladsaxe · Næstved · Vordingborg - Denmark
The world is in a state of flux. The make-up of populations are changing. Traditions are renewed. Power structures change. Yesterday's developing country becomes tomorrow's superpower. Our images of the world are dissolving. Or are they? Sometimes our descriptions of the world resemble a bad phone line where all you can hear is the echo of your own voice.
With this forthcoming IMAGES festival, My World IMAGES tries to catch-up with these changes. We shuffle the deck, even out the distances and let the artists speak for themselves. We leave behind our constructed myths about them – the others, the strangers – in favour of their own stories: 170 individuals, 170 worlds, 170 stories from 170 artists. We hand the stage to musicians, dancers, film and theatre directors, visual artists and writers.
My World IMAGES is all about letting go. Letting go of preconceived ideas and stubborn thoughts. About scratching the surface and lifting the rock. Maybe punk is from Nepal and hiphop orginates from Africa. Maybe there is nothing more wonderful than to let go of your own position for a moment, gaze outwards and take a look at what the world has to offer. Especially The Third World. What is a developing country? If we have to be politically correct, we can say that it is an economically challenged country – but can it also be an artistically challenging country?
My World IMAGES is not just another festival. There is something at stake. We have something on our mind. We have a lot to do. First and foremost there is the meeting. The meeting is the point of origin for all development, including the development of society. That is why My World IMAGES take to the streets and take in the city. The urban space becomes the stage, the gathering point. We want to create a close connection between the festival and its audience in order to establish a more direct dialogue. The city is the frame and the people are the heart of the city – so this is where we will start our meeting. The meeting is the key issue – not just the meeting between artists and audience but also the one between the artists themselves. Cooperation is key and we have built the festival around it. Danish Center for Culture and Development's work with the developing countries is based on working relationships and this is deeply integrated into My World IMAGES. That means that for the first time IMAGES will present works produced by Danish and international artists in close and fruitful cooperation. Works created specifically for the festival. In the newspaper you can read more about the many events and delve into articles about the process behind and creation of some of the works showcased at the festival.
On behalf of the whole My World IMAGES secretariat: Have an amazing festival!
