Opposition Leader Hits Hard on President Jammeh As he celebrates 62th Birthday By Saikou Ceesay
The leader and Secretary General of the opposition-United Democratic Party (UDP) has criticized the Gambian leader Yahya Jammeh over remarks that those who vote for the opposition would not benefit from any of his government’s project.
President Jammeh during the dialogue with the people’s tour last month has singled-out Baddibou Salikenni and Kiang as communities that failed to support him. He vowed that the regions would not benefit from his government’s development initiatives.
Speaking yesterday at the event marking his 62nd birthday, which was graced by scores of party supporters, lawyer Ousainou Darboe said the resources that are used to develop communities are loans that are to be paid by the tax payers.
“How dare could you [president Jammeh] say that those communities would not benefit from their own resources,” he quizzed, stressing that resources earmarked for national developments do not belong to ones father or mother but the whole nation.
The UDP leader further questioned how President Jammeh has came up with the idea of denying the people of Salikenni of their own property.
Darboe stated that some religious scholars are quoting the Holy Qur’an to misinform the people that when ever God makes a person a leader you have to follow, but he said: God did not tell us to follow a leader who is not righteous or a leader who violates the fundamental rights of the people.
“Those scholars who preach such kind of obedience to a leader are nothing but satanic scholars with satanic knowledge,” the UDP leader snapped.
He said there are lot of abnormalities in this country which are caused by educated people; be it the conventionally educated or religious scholars and they would be accountable for their deeds.
He assured the public that they are now ready to see the end of the Jammeh regime come next year.
He advised Jammeh to use the tens of thousands of dalasis to buy books and build libraries for students rather than giving it out for fiesta.
He added: “Yes, it is true that all work no play makes a student dull. It would have been better if these monies are used to buying books and construction of libraries for students. This will pay dividend in the future of our kids. It is not good to inculcate the culture of partying in the mind of school going children,”Darboe warned.

This is what we expect from Darboe. As an opposition leader, he has every right to challenge any rubbish that comes out of Jammeh's ill thought statements. He should be doing this at all times to expose the criminal thinking and mischievous actions of this false leader-president Jammeh. Only a criminal leader like Jammeh in this day and age will think along the line to marginalize part of the population based on their opposit view.
It's a painful feeling to think all the dishonorable, improper, ridiculous stuff, etc from Naughty Pro. Jammeh on a daily basis and no religious scholar have the courage to stand and challenge him on moral grounds. Darboe's point is absolutely right, these socalled scholars are bias and Jammeh is riding on people's back partly because they're misimforming the people based on religious concepts. What a shame!!!! |

Karl, take this as very firm truth; the criminal being of Yaya Jammeh will NEVER change. This fellow is cruel to the core. How does a man steal, kill, and bank on lies, yet expect to be respected?
Yaya is the most untamed creature breeding on Gambian wild soil.
About the Islamic scholars, come on, they know much about what "Munafique" means. When they sit together, they always laugh, knowing they are dead deceptors.
Yaya has no shame in him while saying the type of views he so regularly spews. |

I have always believe that if Darboe and others adapt a harsh approach on Jammeh's policies then sooner or later we will get to a resolution about Democracy in the Gambia.
They can use diplomatic languages and hit the policies instead of the personalities of the man.
Matter of fact, I never understand why UDP and other opposition parties don't call for regular press conference and challenge Jammeh's openly insulting attacks on Gambian people...
The media is willing to cover the stories and or press releases. So why ain't they doing this? Since they don't have access to the TV why not use print?
Dictators don't like being challenged. Sooner or later they will react and get themselves in big trouble with the international community... I just wish we can hear more outright challenges on his 18 century leadership threats on the Gambian tax payer... " Vote for me or you don't see development ... What? that should be said to Kanilai not the rest of the country!!!! |

Sorry, but you know and I know that if newspapers want to exist in The Gambia then there is a certain protol to be followed.

Toubab,
The news outlets exist in the Gambia and they are following protocol thus the reason they are still surviving the oppression. When the last time Darboe called for a press conference they showed up.
So there is absolutely no excuse for not holding a press conference unless you the opposition see no value in the press covering their issues.
I honestly think that is where some of these opposition parties are failing.
Take can example of the UDP, shouldn't the central committee of the UDP be able to issue statements and or challenges? Come on, communication is absolutely crucial at any time.
This is why all the false information being paraded on GRTS and it turns to be facts because no one is out to challenge it.... |

Kayjatta, here is a section of the Gambian 1997 constitution talking about age limits. It states:
PART 1: THE PRESIDENT
Office of President 61. (1) There shall be a President of The Gambia who shall be the Head of State and of Government and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces.
(2) The President shall uphold and defend this Constitution as the supreme law of The Gambia. Qualification 62. (1) A person shall be qualified for election as For election as president if- President
(a) he or she is a citizen of The Gambia by birth or descent,
(b) he or she attained the minimum age of thirty years but not more than sixty-five years;
(c) he or she has been ordinarily resident in The Gambia for the five years immediately preceding the election;
(d) he or she has completed senior secondary school education; and
(e) he or she is qualified to be elected as a member of the National Assembly.
(2) A person who holds the citizenship or nationality of a country other than The Gambia, shall not be qualified for election as President .
(3) A person who, while holding public office in The Gambia has been-
(a) compulsorily retired, terminated or dismissed from such office, or
(b) has been found guilty of any criminal offence by any court or tribunal established by law; or
(c) has been found liable for misconduct, negligence, corruption or improper behaviour by any commission or committee of inquiry established by law shall not be qualified for election as President.
So Darboe is very much qualified for 2011 elections but not 2016... |

Thanks Dbaldeh! I knew Darboe is approaching the age-limit. However, we have some three (3) years to go. It appears this upcoming election should be really critical for the UDP and Darboe particularly. |
