Barry Wells, the outgoing United States ambassador to The Gambia, Thursday bade farewell to the vice president and minister of Women's Affairs, Aja Dr Isatou Njie-Saidy, at a ceremony held at State House in Banjul.

Wells was accompanied to State House by the US Embassy deputy chief of Mission, Cynthia Gregg, and Momodou Tangara, the minister of Foreign Affairs and Gambians abroad.Speaking at the occasion, Momodou Tangara thanked Ambassador Wells for all his support during his tour of duty in The Gambia.

"As a friend, you have been very frank with us. So we thank you very much and wish you all the best," he said.Abdou Colley, the minister for Trade, Employment and Regional Integration, also echoed similar sentiments. He expressed appreciation to the outgoing US ambassador for all the development initiatives undertaken in the country during his tenure of office, including building the capacity as well as sensitising the business community in the country.

He further emphasised that during Ambassador Wells' tenure, they witnessed empowerments in many areas, most especially in the promotion of business in the country that has boosted the business sectors of the country and people at the grassroots.Sheriff Gomez, the minister of Youths and Sports, and Edward Gomez, the Attorney General and minister of Justice, also commended the outgoing US ambassador for the developments registered during his term of office, describing him as a true friend of The Gambia.

For her part, VP Njie-Saidy commended Ambassador Wells on behalf of the government and entire people of The Gambia for the development projects registered during his tenure. "We have enjoyed working with you during the two and half years of your duties in the country," she said.

She noted that the outgoing US ambassador has been complementing the efforts of the government citing the US Embassy's intervention in areas like education and health. According to her, this has empowered the people at the grassroots. "In fact you are not only giving out but you have gone round the country to see how the projects are going on," she said, and further acknowledged the support rendered by the United State Peace Corps Volunteers in the country.

VP Njie-Saidy also Commented on the significance of AGOA, saying it has helped to develop business in the country.Speaking to reporters shortly after meeting the vice president, Wells disclosed that his visit accorded him the opportunity to express gratitude to the Gambian leader through the vice president, as well as to strengthen their ongoing commitments to assist The Gambia in whatever way they could in furtherance of the very good relations they enjoyed over the past two and half years tour of duty in the country.

He further disclosed that it has been a wonderful experience for him during his tour of duty in the country, saying he and his family has enjoyed the warm hospitality accorded to them during their stay in the country.This, he pointed out, had enabled him, his family and the embassy achieve a great deal of success in initiating and promoting a number of programmes.He then expressed appreciation for the opportunity accorded to him to work closely with His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh's government as well as authorities at the local level.

Ivorian special envoy
Madam Delesse Generosa, the consular special of the president of Cote D'Ivoire, Laurent Gbagbo, in charge of Transport and Energy, also met VP Njie-Saidy Thursday at State House in Banjul.Speaking to reporters shortly after her audience with VP Njie Saidy, Madam Generosa said her mission in The Gambia was to deliver a special message from the Ivorian president, Laurent Gbagbo to the Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh.

She also explained that the visit availed them the opportunity to discuss widely on the Development Fund for Transport and Energy of the Ecowas region. Commenting on the document she presented to VP Njie-Saidy, the Ivorian special envoy said:"It is a document that relates to the Development Fund for the Improvement of the Transport and Energy sectors of the Ecowas Region."

At the end of the ceremony, Madam Generosa also presented a wooden chair, depicting authority and power, to the Gambia leader through the vice president.
