Thursday, July 15, 2010
Thousands of people mostly youths and women yesterday lined-up the main entrance into the provincial town of Basse along the Trans-Gambia highway to receive His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh and entourage as they enter the Upper River Region (URR) on day three of his 2010 'Dialogue with the people tour'.

The green flags of the APRC party were displayed on both sides of the highway and T-shirts bearing the portrait of the Gambian leader were visible everywhere while dozens of motor cycle owners wearing green clothes, the colour of the ruling APRC party, provided self-organised escort for the presidential motorcade. The presidential entourage was escorted all the way to Basse Mansajang-Kunda ,where they were installed.

The procession was characterised by singing and dancing in praise of the Gambian leader for his numerous achievements. It took the entourage almost two hours to reach Mansanjang Kunda, which under normal circumstance is a ten-minute drive from the entrance of Basse.

A group of women interviewed by the Daily Observer said the move was to show to President Jammeh that they are firmly behind his government due to the developments he brought to their area. "We will ever be supporting him because each time we look around we see more developments," the excited women remarked.

Gambisarra meeting
Prior to their arrival in Basse, the president and entourage's first point of call in the region was in Gambisarra in Jimara District, URR, where he held a meeting. Addressing the gathering, President Jammeh expressed his desire to construct a bridge over the Basse-Sandugu crossing point that connects Basse to Wuli and Sandu in the northern part of the region. The Gambian leader further expressed his commitment to ensure that the bridge is ready for official inauguration by 2012 during the July 22nd anniversary celebrations.

"The construction work could start even before 2011, but if I do so, you may think it is because of the election. But I swear that no election, neither coup can remove me from power. If I want I will rule until the time I want to retire and handle the leadership to another person I want," President Jammeh told the natives of Gambisarra.

He further expressed his government's resolve to leave no stone unturned to move the country forward. He then commended the people of Gambisarra for their continuous show of loyalty to him and the APRC party, enlightening the gathering that the Gambisarra people stood by him at a time when many people were not encouraged to embrace his vision. He noted that the community have been rallying behind him for the past 16 years.

The Gambian leader promised to provide Kossemarr with a new ferry to ease the difficulties faced by the community. He said by God willing the kind of bridge that was constructed at Sunkulay Kunda would be equally built between Basse and Sandugu Bolong.

President Jammeh further spoke about his resolve to construct a modern road network in Gambisarra that will link Sotouma-Sira, noting that this is necessary for the community given the current poor planning of the roads in the village, which makes it difficult for vehicles to pass through. He further stressed that the current road planning in the village will even make it difficult for the Fire and Ambulance Service to access some parts of the village in case of disaster; such as fire outbreak.

On the issue of compensating those compound heads that will be affected during the construction of the said road project in the village, President Jammeh said it will cost the government a minimum of 11 million Dalasis. He then appealed to the residents especially those whose compounds are going to be affected to come together and discuss among themselves and see how best government can construct first class roads in the village.

He further appealed to them to see how best they could come to terms and allow the government to go ahead with the project. "By the grace of Allah, construction works will start. This is not because the election is coming, but I want to make sure that you have the first class road even better than that of the North Bank Region," he stated.

He then confirmed that in the 2001 election, it was only Gambisarra and Jimara who stood firmly to support the APRC; something he said paid a great dividend. "I have never lost a vote in this district. I will make sure that I fulfil all the promises I made for this village," President Jammeh assured the people.

On the issue of security in the area, President Jammeh assured the people of Gambisarra that in five years' time, he will provide the community with enough security that is rarely seen in any part of the country. On agriculture, President Jammeh urged the people of Gambisarra to diversify in farming productivity, urging them to put in practice the cultivation of other varieties. According to him, there are different types of farming, some of which, he noted do not require much power. He specifically stated that findi, beans and cashew farming are the easiest farming practice that one can do and make living.

He further pointed out the immediate benefits of these produced to farmers. "If you are a farmer and want to make fast money easily, plant more cashews and see. In fact whoever wants to cultivate it, I have a type of cashew that can mature in 13 months after sowing it," said President Jammeh.

Speaking earlier, Kalifa Kambi, the deputy minister of Agriculture responded to some of the concerns raised by some speakers concerning his ministry. He assured that all concerns are noted and will be considered.

The deputy minister used the platform to appeal to farmers to keep seeds, and nuts after the rainy season. According to him, the government has plans to expand rice cultivation across the country and urged the farmers to establish associations to work closely with the agricultural extension workers. Responding to the issue of non-licensing of tractors which according to some speakers normally disturb them, Deputy Minister Kambi said that they will look into the issue and see what will be easier for them (farmers) in sustaining the tractors.

Lamin Kaba Bajo, the minister of Water Resources and National Assembly matters, joined the previous speakers to thank the community of Gambisarra for their large turnout at the meeting. He further commended the people of Gambisarra and its satellite villages for their unreserved support to the APRC government since inception in 1994.

As the election is approaching, Minister Bajo urged the people especially the youths to register so as to vote, saying it is through election that one can manifest his or her patriotism and loyalty to the president. He then acknowledged the giant strides made in the area of agriculture in recent times, as a result of the Gambian leader's 'back to the land' call. He then urged the people to utilise the tractors being donated to them by the Gambian leader wisely so as to double their gains after the rainy season.

For his part, Alhaji Haji Kulley Camara, the chief of Jimara District assured President Jammeh of his people's continuous support. He declared Jimara as a no-go-area for the opposition, noting that they (the opposition) are only good at making unfulfilled promises. Other speakers included: Alhaji Saiba Dukureh, the alkalo of the village and Haja Nyabally-Jallow, on behalf of women among others.

They all re-affirmed their support for President Jammeh and the APRC party. The 3-hour meeting was characterized by the donation of 4 tractors to the Gambisarra villagers and the naming of a new baby after the First Lady, Madam Zineb Yahya Jammeh.

"But I swear that no election, neither coup can remove me from power. If I want I will rule until the time I want to retire and handle the leadership to another person I want," President Jammeh told the natives of Gambisarra." Remarked the President, Sheikh Professor Dr Alhagie Yahya Jammeh at a political rally in Gambisara URR.

Guys if our president can utter this remark in front of the nation, don't you think we are really far away from democracy?
Mr. Sheikh Professor, you don't "hand over the leadership to another person you want", but rather you step down for your VP to complete your term and then hold elections or elections are held at the end of your term (without you running) and the winner replaces you. That is what the constitution says...

Bingo.

diaspora! Too many Chiefs and Very Few Indians.

Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

Yahya jammeh is funny.
Anyway this is Africa. And people follow him. What about Hitler? He got people to follow him. Funny

Kumi maybe you need to read some history before you start to compare Jammeh with Hilter. Hitler believed in Ethnic Cleansing and killed six million people including Jews, Gipsy, Homosexuals and Disabled people in Germany. There aren't even six million people in Gambia, and I doubt it Hitler's victims families find your comments funny let alone Gambians. How many Gambians would honestly agree with you that Jammeh is into Ethnic Cleansing? What nonsense.

Kumi,

That is the most irresponsible utterance from a coup maker posing as president. Jammeh is total disgrace to Gambia.

All the people dancing for him will one day cry under him. That has been written here long time. Today we have evidence as his most trusted now turn his deadly enemies. Shame to them all.

Its a BOLD statement from a confident individual , he can fore tell the future which in the case of Gambia is very easy. You do not have to be a Listiharr Katt to know that No Elections can remove him. First ya'll need to tell the opposition to retire and get their houses back in order. All he did was state facts and it's really pissing ya'll off. Trust me if the trend continues 2030 we will all be wearing GREEN. Unfortunately thats not what he said he said "if I want" does not mean I will.........................................................Peace

The people of Kantora District in the Upper River Region (URR) of the country have expressed their unwavering commitment to maintain the current political status quo in the district, and pledged 'total support' for President Jammeh in the forthcoming 2011 Presidential Election.

The people of Kantora, who were speaking Thursday afternoon during a meeting held in Koina village in the district as part of the ongoing 2010 'Dialogue with the people tour' stressed that they are supporting the president not only for the development projects he brought to their area, but for the genuine love they have for him. For his part, President Jammeh told the people that he is not in the district for politics as he is already assured of their loyalty to him and the APRC. He commended them for the loyalty, which he said has been on since 1994.

Responding to some of the concerns raised by the people such as the need to reconstruct Basse-Kantora road, upgrade the Koina Minor Health Centre, as well as provision of more farm implements and inputs to boost farming, the president apologised to them for the current condition of the road, and promised to reconstruct the road in the area that connects Basse through Koina. He opined that the people of the area deserve such infrastructure to improve their conditions in view of the fact that they have been manifesting a genuine show of loyality to him and his party.

"The road network is the first priority. Some people suggested that I should bring the Sankulay-Kunda ferry to Basse but I am not doing that because it is not development and a way forward; the way forward and development is to build a similar bridge that is between Sankulay Kunda-Janjangbureh in Basse-Sandugu," the president promised, assuring that this would be done soon. The Gambian leader told the people of Kantora that all what is left in terms of basic social amenities to be fulfilled for them by his government is a good road network, reminding them that he has provided them with electricity and water facilities, amongst others.

Also speaking, the minister of the Interior, Ousman Sonko told the meeting that the Gambian leader has since 1994 to date put peace and security high on its development agenda, and commended him [President Jammeh] for that. He explained that the electrification of the region is not only meant for household consumption but also to enhance security in the area as it discourages criminals from carrying out illegal activities.

He recalled that in 2005, when criminality was on the rise in the region, the president out of his desire to ensure the security of every Gambian instructed the deployment of the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) in Fatoto. He pointed out that the presence of the PIU has significantly reduced crime in the area.

However, the Interior minister stressed that the police alone cannot do it all, and urged residents of the region to cooperate with them in ensuring that the security of the region becomes everyone's business. He further urged all and sundry to be each other's keeper in jealously safeguarding the admirable peace and stability that the country is endowed with, thanks to the dynamic leadership of the president.

He also told the gathering that the existing peace and security in the country contributed in no small measure to the achievements registered in the last 16 years by the Jammeh administration.

Drugs
The Interior minister also spoke on the illicit drug trade, and warned the people, youths in particular, to distance themselves from it. He advised them to be vigilant about drug dealers given the fact that Koina is prone to such activities as it is near the border. He further urged them not to allow drugs to be used in their households or harbour drug dealers, warning that there are severe laws against such.

Minister Sonko went on to enlighten the people on the devastating effects of drugs on society, saying it has made many youths to become inmates in prison and insane in psychiatric health facilities. He concluded by challenging the youths to nurture attitudinal change and be conscious of the fact that they are the future leaders of the country.

Speaking earlier, the deputy minister of Agriculture, Kalifa Kambi, thanked the people of the area, Koina in particular, for responding to the Gambian leader's back-to-the-land call, which he said is geared towards making Gambia self-reliant in food. Responding to concerns raised by the villagers on the need for more farm implements to increase their agricultural production, Deputy Minister Kambi told them that President Jammeh, who is the number one farmer and minister of Agriculture, cares for farmers, and assured them that their needs have been noted.

He then underscored the importance of agricultural diversification, urging the farmers to engage in different types of farming. He specifically told them to venture into cashew production, sorghum, findi and beekeeping; farming ventures he described as easy and high cash earners.

The Deputy Agriculture Minister also spoke about his ministry's resolve to promote large-scale maize production in the country with a view to responding to the high demand for poultry feed, which is derived from maize. This, he went on, will provide more maize for human consumption as well as reduce the high cost of poultry feed.

The minister of Forestry and Environment, Jatto Sillah, who hails from URR, acknowledged the support and loyalty of the people of Kantora to President Jammeh and the APRC. While advising the people of the area to nurture unity, he called on the entire region to be grateful to the Jammeh administration for having brought about numerous infrastructural developments to their doorsteps. He also declared that the entire region including Wuli is totally for the president.

Speaking earlier, Saikou Samura, the APRC constituency chairman, Koina Ward, reaffirmed their unshakeable loyalty to the president and the APRC. He then appealed for more mechanised farming implements to boost agricultural productivity in the region. Aja Juma Trawally, the lady councilor, Koina Ward, commended President Jammeh for empowering women in the country, while also declaring Kantora as totally behind him. She further commended the president for bringing lots of developments to their doorsteps.

The chief of Kantora, Bacho Ceesay; Bocarr Jawo and Suraka Gumanneh all expressed similar sentiments, while hailing the Gambian leader's efforts.

Visit to Koina health facility
Shortly after the meeting, the president inspected the Koina Minor Health Centre, and pledged 60,000 liters of gas oil and one water reserve tank for the centre. He also gave a handsome cash amount to some patients on admission.

Visit to URR Nerica Rice Farmers Association
President Jammeh then proceeded to Suduwol in the same district, where he visited the URR Nerica Rice Farmers Association (NAFA). The Gambian leader, as a show of encouragement to the association, bought all the bags of rice in their stores, amounting to D328, 400. He also pledged 11 bags of his highly matured cashew nuts to the association with a view to promoting cashew production.

It is an insult for this man to look in your face and tell you that he will rule as long as he wants and pick a replacement... I guess Gambia is his personal kingdom....

When all doors to peaceful change are shut, the only inevitable means to change is by force... the same thing that happens to his predecessor will happen to him if there are no option for peaceful change...

It is so good to deal with dumb intellectuals who claim to be educated... am ashame to read some of the dummest comments in support of a clueless regime... Shameful to say the least!!!!
