Offices Become Breeding Grounds for Cockroaches By Saikou Jammeh
An opposition lawmaker Sedia Jatta has said that public offices have become breeding grounds for cockroaches.
The veteran politician said public offices have been transformed to restaurants attracting cockroach invasions.
"In most of the offices you go, you either find the staff eating or they are going out to buy food," said Sedia.
"This makes people unproductive," he said, but also blamed employers for not allocating time for lunch break for their staff.
"Non stop is not good for one’s health. If you are an ulcer patient, you aggravate it and if you are not, you are inviting ulcer."
Sedia further expressed the need for the immigration department to be provided with computers to accurately keep data.
He lamented the fact that the records are manually kept, which he said is poorly done, and the mountain of files they keep carry dust.
The minister of fisheries and water resources, Kaba Bajo said the need for lunch break is provided for both in the constitution and the general orders.
"Sometimes the problem is that the information is not filtered down" he said, which some employees take advantage of.

Whilst what the Hon Gent says is undoubtly true, more data more figures, either on computer or manually is not necessary, education about these problems is the answer or,lets face it just common sense, people dont always use it although they are fully aware that dirt and unhealthy habits do harm to them and those around them

This is quite true. I think what the gambia government should do, is enact the break period and build eating huts within the complex. Eating in office does not only encourage roaches but rats as well. These rodents are dangerous to IT equipment. |

Maybe, but as the Hon Gent observes This makes people unproductive "you either find the staff eating or they are going out to buy food," Will they go back after their allocated break ,or just stay and while away the time?

IN UK office workers used to have an hour for lunch. When I was young my dad came home from work to eat with me and my mum. These days many people don't get a proper lunch break. This adds to stress.
I am teaching at a school where we are supposed to have half an hour, but we are lucky to have 20 minutes. This is just enough time to eat in a rushed way...no time for anything else!
Ulcers are caused by bacteria, so I don't think eating at your desk will affect that. |

Sidia Jatta Calls for Lunch Break in Public Service, Formation of Land Commission By Isatou Bittaye 05-07-10
The National Assembly for Wuli West, Hon. Sidia Jatta has called for the introduction of lunch break in Public offices to enhance the productivity of workers. He said this on Wednesday, 30th June 2010, while contributing on the motion on the adjournment (Adjournment Debate) at the National Assembly. “Madam Speaker, offices in this country have become breeding centers for cockroaches because they have been transformed into restaurants. Madam Speaker, you cannot have people working from 8.00 to 4.00p.m without break, as they will become unproductive”, he said.
Sidia told the deputies that the lack of break makes people to bring food to the offices and eat while working and the situation need to be reviewed to make for lunch break. The member for Wuli West told the Assembly that there is need for lunch break of at least thirty minutes or one hour to enable people to go out to eat at restaurants instead of eating in the offices. Turning to another issue, Sidia said “I have asked a parliamentary question on what is holding the formation of the Land Commission and the answer given to me was that there is nothing holding the formation of the Land Commission, but Madam, there is need for this Land Commission.” Sidia said there are cases of land disputes in Wuli East, Tumana and Wuli West and that it is necessary to establish the Land Commission to immediately start dealing with land cases. The Wuli West NAM further said that there is the urgent need for the computerization of the Immigration Passport office to address the mountain of files lying on the tables in order to ease their work. “The Curator’s office also needs to be computerized to keep it up to date with a neat and proper filling system,” said Sidia. Hon. Jatta also challenged the Livestock Marketing Agency to come up with a plan on what they need to do with the cattle tax since they are now responsible for its collection. He recommended that the money collected from the cattle tax should be used to buy drugs for the animals in case of outbreak of diseases. The Wuli West NAM further dwelled on the regional institutions such as the ECOWAS and PAN-African Parliaments. He said the ECOWAS parliament existed for over 35 years now and is run by tax payers money, hence the need for them to be effective. He said national parliaments must begin to talk seriously and push things for the regional institutions to do something. Sidia told the Assembly that there exist blocs in every continent of the world except Africa and that the regional institutions in Africa should be serious in what they are doing for the betterment of Africa if not they are wasting time and Africa does not have time to waste. I think that Hon Jatta may be well advised to keep a low profile for a little while,he does seem to be rocking the boat with sensible measures that could cause the waters to become more cloudy and create more waves than he would like, unless of course that is his intention, lets observe for a little and see the outcome. |
