Sidia Jatta Raises Questions On UTG Enrollment & Govt Scholarships 2842 STUDENTS 2142 MALES AND 700 FEMALES, 463 STUDENTS ON FULL SCHOLARSHIP By Isatou Bittaye 30-06-10
The National Assembly Member for Wuli West, Hon. Sidia Jatta has asked the Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology to state the total student enrollment of the University of the Gambia (UTG) and the number of students currently on full government scholarship. He asked this question at the National Assembly on Monday 28th June 2010.
In responding to the question on behalf of the Minister for Higher Education, the Vice-President and Minister for Women’s Affairs, Dr. Aja Isatou Njie-Saidy said the current enrollment of UTG is 2,842 students. She said 2,142 students are male and 700 students female. Madam Njie-Saidy stated that as a direct result of efforts aimed at increasing access to quality higher education within the country, enrollment at UTG has been increasing steadily over the years. She said in this direction, the number of facilities established has increased to allow for access of varied programs in response to national development needs and stakeholder demand. The Vice-President disclosed that the total number of students currently on full government scholarship is 463. She stated that the figure comprises of 61 medical students enrolled in the 2005/2006 academic year, 100 students enrolled in 2006/2007, 66 students in 2007/2008, 79 enrolled in 2008/2009 and 157 students enrolled for 2009/2010 academic year. Madam Njie Saidy indicated that in monetary terms, government will spend D10, 207, 814.00 on UTG scholarship by the end of the year.
