Halifa Urges Gambians To Break Self Perpetuating Rule By Baba Sillah
Opposition-PDOIS’ spokesperson Halifa Sallah has urged Gambians to break the current trend self-perpetuating rule as the country’s presidential election approaches -2011.
Sallah who led the opposition-alliance, NADD in 2006 presidential elections said 45 years after independence, The Gambia has been led by only two presidents, noting "unless we break the current trend of self perpetuating rule, two heads of state will lead The Gambia for 60 years.
"As we face another election cycle, it is the duty of every Gambian who is 18 years and above, to reflect on the state of The Gambia after 45 years of nationhood and ask whether this is the same Gambia with its growing poverty, redundancies, growth of drug lords and contradiction of liberty that should continue to be up to the year 2020 and beyond," the politician cum sociologist said Saturday at the PDIOS’ press conference.
"Reveals Agenda 2011"
Agenda 2011, Halifa said is based on the principle that those that wish to contest against the ruling government next elections will have to face each other in the primaries and would support the winner thereof.
He however pointed out that the winner must administer a transitional government for two to five years and should nurture democracy.
"All institutions, private or public which are legally established will be protected throughout the transition.
"And cabinet would be constituted through the consultation with all stakeholders," he said.
He said PDOIS remains under NADD and any one interest in embracing Agenda 2011, should contact Sedia Jatta, who he said is making consultations.
" playing field not leveled"
Halifa said though few would dare disagree that PDOIS can change The Gambia for a better, it is unfortunate that Gambians are yet to be politically conscious.
He said since 1997 presidential elections, no candidate has more than 20, 000 people, an indication that most registered voters are not registered members of any political parties making it easy for them to shift their loyalties.
Sallah went on to say that opposition parties will have uphill task to win any elections as the playing field is yet to be leveled.
"Every single vote counts"
Halifa Sallah, Gambians are facing the most decisive period of our history. They are at crossroad and the moment of decision is just at the corner.
And what the voters think should be the concern of those who wish to seek their votes and vice versa, he said.
He said power resides in the voters to elect-in their choice to serve their interest, adding when that trust is abused, the voters still have the right remove the person.
"Conflict in opposition camp"
Against Ousanou Darboe, UDP leader’s view that NADD registration is a disaster, Sallah said this was a constitutional requirement.
Also on NRP leader Hamat Bah’s comment that his party left the Alliance and followed UDP, being the majority, Halifa said Bah had not denounced his representative, Dulo Bah’s nomination of PPP leader to lead the Alliance
