Gambia Prepares Against Internet Revolution By Binta A Bah
Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) recently ended two-day training on Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPV6), which has less than two years to make a transition communication protocol.
The training which was held at the Kairaba Beach Hotel brought together various communication providers and experts from the country.
The Executive Commissioner at PURA, Gabriel Latjor Ndow told participants that the currently used Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPV4) address space has drastically depleted to just fewer than 8 percent.
He said the remaining IP addresses are expected to be fully assigned by the end of 2011, but noted the level of awareness regarding IPV6 remain low in Africa.
"Without trained students and engineers, the transition to IPV6 would be either of poor quality or would be delayed as 20 million engineers work today directly or indirectly on internet issues and only a very few percentage has received quality training on IPV6," the Utilities watchdog said.
"There are more devices relying on IP as the vehicle for carrying information in voice, data and video hence the importance of highly technical training in IT is timely."
Dembo Sankareh from the Ministry of Information and Communication Infrastructure posited that the training being the first time would ensure quality internet service in the country.
