By Abdoulie John
Following reports of the alleged blockage of TheGambiaEcho, one of the most outspoken voices against the excesses of the current Gambian government, concerns are going crescendo in the media fraternity and the rest of the society about the future of free online news site.
Such a situation prompted JollofNew to investigate the matter, and it turned out that the paper is actually not been accessed in the country.
Responding to a question posed by JollofNews’ Gambian Affairs Editor during a press conference, last Wednesday, May 26, at the margins of the closing ceremony of the 47th Ordinary Session of African Commission for Human and People’s Rights (ACHPR), regarding any contact that The Gambia Echo management might have done in order to inform the Commission about this deplorable situation, Mrs Reine Alapini-Gansou, Chairperson of the ACHPR, told newsmen that the Commission has not yet been contacted or informed.
“We have not been informed about The Gambia Echo blockage,” she said.
Last Monday, the management of The Gambia Echo cited “reliable sources” in Banjul that the paper had been blocked since last week.
“This censorship move effectively denies Gambians free access to information contrary to our laws and our Constitutional statutes,” the paper stated, calling on organizations such as the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), and other free media advocate institutions and governments around the world to help redress the situation.
Acknowledging the fact that the blockage of any news outlet constitutes a real attack against the right to information, the ACHPR Chairperson reiterated the Commission’s readiness to address such a situation with responsibility.
Prior to this, Mrs Alapini-Gansou spared no time to indicate that the privilege that Gambia had to host the main African human rights institutions should essentially go with responsibility.
“The Gambia should be a Peace Haven!” she told assembled press men at Laico Atlantic Hotel in Banjul.
In other words, Gambia could have been the African capital of human rights.

A terrorist site is nothing but a terrorist site, If America had any interest in these fools they would have all been arrested and jailed. The fact is none of the issues discussed pertains to the White house. In America not only will the site be blocked but the FBI will be knocking at their door steps. This is not a newspaper my friends, and rest assured the blockage will continue. The Freedom newspaper is also in the same Blacklist and I do not even need to explain. Most of the so called online newsblogs ought to be blocked Period. How can an Almudou sitting in his apartment tell Gambians whats happening in Gambia ,If rumor mongering is Journalism we shall all see about that. Come to think about it I think I should also direct my concerns to the ACHPR Chair lady as a Citizen and identify the goals of the Blogspot. It would be interesting to see the response after getting a glimse of Matthews writing and allegationsLOl......................................................Peace

Sister O, Thats simply because some Gambians think the Law was written for other Gambians and not them ,Gambian laws are not applicable to them I suppose. Terrorism is a world wide issue and phenomenon that cannot be overlooked. Hopefully Gambians in all eventuality will come to terms with it. On a daily basis Terrorist websites are being shut down without repercussions and even American citizens are monitored for using key words such as Alqaeda on search engines so what ever these African terrorist think is convenient, unfortunately is not. They will all be shut down since they represent nothing but hatred and bigotry. No wonder the ACHPR never received a report but god willing the case just started ...........................................................................Peace

The term Terrorism is experiencing seriouse inflation in Bantaba and worldwide thanks to people like Moe and former U.S. president Bush. The term has lost it's value and is being squandered in every petty issue. Is it a worldwide problem....yes; But REMEMBER many freedom fighters were/are seen to be terrorists (different topic for another day).

Would you consider becoming a little economical with the term terrorism/terrorist?

Thanks

Yes there goes the game again, Sister O did I hear you say National Security regarding the online news blockage in Banjul?
Haaa haaaaaaaaaaaaa haaaaaaaaaaaaa, I canot help but laugh my head off.
In the Gambia Government's case is not for National security BUT NATIONAL DENIAL OF IMFORMATION.
But yes you can put it that way if you choose to, we will not be suprise when the IG of police said the reason of their denial of permit to the opposition UDP was to do with security. Two weeks down the line the UDP holds a rally without the presence of a single security.
Call them terrorists of almudos but the Government of the day knows that they are far more popular and red than the locally censored news papers in The Gambia.

Kitabul Arrer, I think the problem solver just ruined it for all interested, trust me It is not gonna work now if the authorities are really worried about blocking the site. Gambians are not literate enough to put in the required work just to access a site.First of all the writer is just jumping to conclusions, He is not aware whether the block covers certain proxy servers and applications that could bypass the blockage. I hope you do understand that the person who took initiative to block the site is an I.T professional, Blocking a website is the easiest thing to do and can be monitored by the number of hits received within a region if it's being accessed and block the access proxies. I have tried accessing Freedom newspaper and I think I know how these sites are being blocked and trust me the answer will not be coming from me. If its actually stored as a URL address or combination of both I.P addressess that alone I think is sufficient, going overboard is really not necessary...........................................Peace

Hey Moe, actually you can access The Echo by going to "cover my ass dot com" and clicking on the same, according to the Echo who is working very hard to defeat the blockade.
