Speaking of Big brother, closed-circuit television in Britain has become very widespread. Apparently we are the most watched people on earth, with one camera for every 14 people.

Kisley, I never understood how the British can tolerate that. Maybe the officials/the press is keeping them in constant fear of being robbed, murdered, or attacked by terrorists (okay, the IRA or Quaida bombs in London showed that the least is not only fictional) so they feel more secure when they are watched up to the toilet. Big Brother cares for you...

Hi Serenata,
As usual its a political cop out,how to save money, the politicians thought Police are too expensive,so we wont get as many as we should have lets put cameras in the streets then if anything happens we can do something and deal with the matter when we have time so overtime to pay!It also helps the Lawyers too, because the quality of the video is poor, another plus point to get the criminals off, can't put them in prison its too expensive and anyway we have no space!
Yes I am cynical.1984 is here thats for sure!!!

1984 - yes, it is here. The police can lean back and relax, as they do in case of DNA technology. Normal police work maybe is too exhausting for the poor, asthenic boys and girls...

We shouldn't forget though that the level of crime in the UK is horrendeous!!
I don't know what to think of this, but it doesn't harm anybody, I've got nothing to hide, i behave myself in public

British people are losing it big time, the youth are really out of control and something needs to be done. But if this is the right solution? What ever happened to strictness and discipline for the children in Britain?

Twinkly please dont over exagerate. The majority of British people are law abiding, family minded and decent. We have a minority ( a large minority) of an under class that are lawless and dont bring up their children well. In some cases they can be third or fourth generation of unemployed people living off the state. Some areas are ghettos of unemployment and crime and poverty. It is a big and complex problem with no quick fixes.

But beating children is no answer to any of these problems!

Sorry Gambiabev if I disrespected your country.
I chose to live here and I like it but there is a big difference compared to other european countries.
What you say is true, it's this "big" minority that's spoiling it for the rest. But I don't agree that it is just the unemployment, it's youngsters going out drinking etc.aswell. In the 2 1/2 years that I've been back, I went out only once and surely there was trouble and the night had to finish early. So it is no surprise to me that there are so many street cameras, just watch these docs on cable, I wonder where this is leading to.

I think kids go wild because of lack of attention at home from the parents. There are so many people who are too busy with themselves, maybe the adults have some kind of problems and donīt see how it affects their children. How a child behaves is all a result of the upbringing and how their parents raised them. I donīt think it is a matter of where they live, in the ghetto or in good areas. There are many wellbehaved, respectful, good "ghettochildren" as well as there are many uptownkids who are very disrespectful (and who also have the cash to buy drugs etc). So I would say misbehaving children are a result of misbehaving parents.

babylon you are correct, even if a child lives in a ghetto they can be well mannered. it is just that they are given too much. How many times do you see a child with a mobile phone or mp3 players. I went to an event in central london and was appalled at the lack of manners on some of the children. Seats were limited but small children while adults stood. I could not do that in my young age.

Many kids are definitely too spoiled, Jambo. Some moms and dads show love in the wrong way, giving their kids all they want for some strange reason. That is totally wrong! Iīm teaching my children that if you want something you must earn it first. Things donīt just drop down from the sky. They get their toys at xmas and birthdays and thats it. Besides, itīs still quite unknown how mobile phones affect people and children in particular because their heads are more vournable. So I donīt allow them to have that at all. Why does a 7 year old need a phone anyway? Ridicilous! I can discuss it with my daughters when they turn 12, then maybe she can have a cellphone. Of course they donīt like it, but I am the parent and those are my rules which they have to follow. Discipline doesnīt mean that one must spank her kids, there are other, non cruel ways to discipline your children.

Sorry Serenata for going off topic again.

No problem for me, Babylon. I share your opinions on raising children.

After all, mobile phones have something to do with 'watching' - nobody wastes a thought about the fact that all your whereabouts can be tracked as long as your cellphone is on.

In my younger days we went to the park or beach. parents now send children to the shop!! I cannot remember where i read the report but it was done in a school children aged 10-11, out 150 children, 112 had phones. 75 had contract paid for by their parents, the rest were top up. Each child had two ringtones that they had set up using the computer at home. i was speechless, it worked out that an average contract could cost parents Ģ17.00 a month!!.

I look at the children in my area and they are all fashionable dressed one child is a fashion plate, it is all about show.
The happiest children belong to a family who go out twice a month to what ever childrens event that is happening in central london, it could be greenwich, richmond or southbank. they spend time with the children. these children will not be on the streets.
