Friday, May 28, 2010 The Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh Thursday evening was conferred with the 'Distinguished Service Award' by high-ranking officials of Shaw University in North Carolina in the United States of America in recognition of his strides in the development of The Gambia, particularly in the education sector.
The Shaw University officials, who were accompanied to the president's Kanilai residence by Ebrima JT Kujabi, the Gambia's ambassador-at-large are to propose the possibility of starting their Africa Initiative on Education in The Gambia, as well as the desire to establish a communication centre in the country, These initiatives are inline with their objective of connecting the Africans and African-Americans. Speaking at the occasion, President Jammeh thanked the Shaw University for what he called a wonderful and surprise award, describing their initiative of establishing the communication centre in The Gambia as a laudable idea.
He underscored the initiative of the Shaw University of trying to connect not only African-Americans and Gambians but also people of African decent as something laudable. "I really want to thank you for the award and thank you for choosing The Gambia for the centre as a hub for the connection between Africans and the Africans in the Diaspora," the president stated.
Reiterating that the information centre is a significant initiative, President Jammeh used the opportunity to suggest the establishment of a campus of the Shaw University in Africa in The Gambia in the near future, pointing out that such a move will be an important platform to connect African-Americans. This, he added will give the African-American students the joy of coming to Shaw University in Africa from the United States of America. He told the delegation that they have made every effort possible to reconnect not only Africans and African-Americans but Africans everywhere worldwide.
President Jammeh stressed the need for Africans within and outside to pull their weight and work together towards the unification of the African continent, further stressing that working together as one will pay the continent, which he described as the richest in terms of natural resources.
"Africa will be the greatest force to reckon with if we all Africans work together," he opined. The president spoke at length on the importance his government attaches to the education sector, indicating that this is why when they came in 1994, he thought of instituting the University of The Gambia. This, he explained was among other things to wipe out ignorance and ensure access and affordable university education to Gambians. He described ignorance as the worst enemy of man, stressing that the only way of eradicating this menace is by educating the people.
He also highlighted the importance his government attaches to the health and agriculture sectors. The president finally commended Ebrima JT Kujabi for his efforts. Also speaking at the occasion, Professor John Kester, a member of Shaw University Board of Trustees, explained that they are in the country to reconnect with Africans, something he said, is their university's initiative. He extolled the leadership qualities of President Jammeh and the strides that he made in the development of The Gambia.
The Shaw University don urged President Jammeh to continue to using his skills towards the reconnection of the Africans and African-Americans. He described the university's African initiative as inclusive, disclosing that many things are involved ranging from cultural exchange, to research programmes, amongst others, declaring that Shaw is proud to be associated with The Gambia. "We are here to begin African Initiative on Education and we desired to have an information centre established in The Gambia," he stated, explaining that the proposed centre will cater for the needs of many African-Americans who want to come to Africa. He told the Gambian leader that the Shaw University Board of Trustees recognised his [President Jammeh's] development efforts in the country, adding that he has inculcated self-confidence in the citizens of this country.
Dr Lee Monroe, vice president Institutional Advancement Sponsored Programme at the Shaw University expressed similar sentiments, further expressing hope that they will be able to work with the government of The Gambia. The ministers of Information and Communication Infrastructure; and the Fisheries, Water Resources and National Assembly Matters, Alhagie Cham and Lamin Kaba Bajo respectively, all hailed the decision of Shaw University in choosing The Gambia for such an initiative.
