NRP Leader says Ruling APRC Government is Paranoid By Saikou Jammeh
Agents of the ruling-Alliance for Patriotism Reconciliation and Construction (APRC) continue to suppress opposition parties’ activities, even legal rallies, but the leader of the opposition National Reconciliation Party believes this is an indication that the incumbent government is paranoid. Hamat Bah was speaking to The Discourse Anchor last Saturday hours after his party was denied the right to hold a rally in Fass, Upper Saloum, Central River Region, despite police approval. Read on
You have long been absent from the Gambia’s political scene, why has it taken you so long to re-appear? Well we were getting prepared to be more organised after the disintegration of the National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD). We felt it was wise to go back to the drawing board and study the political situation. This way we could strategize and chart a new way forward to regain our past glory.
What are your findings? The Gambia’s political situation is not an easy one. It is dynamic and changes by day or even by the hour. After being quiet for a while we decided to make a re-start. We have now renewed our common course and the time has come for us to be back in the arena. We believe we have strong support base nation-wide. People are committed to supporting our course.
The period we have been quiet we received complaints from people that we should come-out. We have now started and this will continue.
What will you say about this unfortunate disruption of your rally? There is a misunderstanding. We understand that the commissioner of police in Central on"River region is saying that there is a security threat in the area, but I know it is all politically motivated.
We have the legal authority to go ahead with our rally even the Commissioner of Operations, Omar Jawo, told us to go ahead with it. But we decided to cancel it in the interest of peace. I am sure if we forced our way they would provoke us. And it would have been bloody because I cannot control my people from retaliating. As you can see they are all annoyed and can hurt anyone who blocks their way.
Did you have the permit to hold the rally? There is no question of permit. We got our permit.
What would you do next? I will apply again for a permit to have another rally. Then I will tour the whole Upper Saloum constituency village by village and finally hold a meeting in Fass.
Are you sure of getting another permit? Let me not talk about that for now.
This is not the first time the police are frustrating opposition parties’ rallies. What is your take on this? That shows that the ruling APRC is paranoid. They would have seen a crowd here they did not expect. People were coming from every part of Upper Saloum. But they would loose.
There is a popular call for opposition re-union. Do you subscribe to this? I do not think NRP will participate in any alliance. I do not intend to mortgage my party. We are ready to challenge the regime. Anybody who intends to join us is welcomed, but we are not planning to join any alliance.

The criminal Yaya Jammeh will not tell his thugs to seek permission even when they venture in their brutal terror of good people. Why must others seek permission for peaceful meetings?
To get rid of this banditory, Gambians have to resist without fear.
Criminality has to be confronted.
Did he Yaya seek any permission to stage that terrorist coup of July 1994? |
