The Gambian leader, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh has won another prestigious award dubbed the "Pride of African Women Award" from the Women Advancement for Economic and Leadership Empowerment in Africa (WAELE) in recognition of his remarkable contributions to the emancipation, empowerment and advancement of African women.

This was revealed to journalists Thursday evening at State House in Banjul by the founder and president of WAELE, Dr Basirat Nahibi, shortly after meeting the Gambian leader. Dr Nahibi, who led a high-powered delegation from WAELE, also disclosed that her organisation has decided to adopt President Jammeh as its grand patron; an honour she said was accepted by him [the president].

The WAELE president further revealed that President Jammeh and six other leaders from within and outside the continent who have contributed to the advancement and upliftment of African women will be awarded on the 1st of July, 2010 in Abuja Nigeria during the course of the WAELE 3rd Continental Conference. The event, she said is scheduled to take place from 1-2 July 2010 at the Ecowas Commission with the theme "African Women Emancipation: Key to the Future".

According to her, others to be awarded are Presidents Goodluck Jonathan of Nigeria; Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete of Tanzania; Paul Kigame of Rwanda; Tereze Fernandez De La Vaga, deputy prime minister of the Kingdom of Spain; Raila Odinga, prime minister of Kenya; Joice Hilda Banda, vice president of Malawi; and Baroness Caroline Cox, Member of British House of Lords and Founder- Humanitarian Aid Relief Trust (HART).

Dr Nahibi hailed President Jammeh for all the good things he has been able to do in The Gambia and for the advancement and upliftment of Gambian women. She further hailed him for being an advocate of peace in Africa, describing his outstanding effort in restoring peace in Guinea-Bissau and Guinea as unprecedented. "We are awarding him with the Pride of African Women Award. And not only that we need somebody like him to be our grand patron and he has graciously accepted that," she said, and added: "We told him that African women need his support, advice and encouragement."

The WAELE president noted that The Gambia is the first and up till now only country in the West African sub-region to have a female vice president and female speaker of the National Assembly. Going by this and other achievements, Dr Nahibi stressed that they believe if they have someone like President Jammeh in front of them as their leader and patron, they will be able to achieve their objective of convincing other African leaders to look into the issue of women emancipation in the continent.

While reiterating that President Jammeh is the only leader chosen among the rest of the leaders who are to be awarded as the Grand Patron of the organisation, Dr Nahibi lauded him for giving hope to the women of The Gambia through the provision of free maternal care and education, the girls and women empowerment scheme, as well as encouraging food self-sufficiency to battle hunger and poverty.

WAELE is a Pan African Organisation that was founded on 8 May, 2004, and headquartered in Nigeria. The organisation is structured to meet the yearnings of African women across the continent who believe women should participate more fully in economic decision-making and governance of the African continent. Present in 46 African countries, WAELE hopes to fill this gap through various capacity building programmes, women access to loan and credits, mobilisation, trade exhibitions, as well as industrial and political involvement.

The organisation also strives to unify various groups and provide a stronger voice towards meeting African women's aspirations. Its long-term objective is to have a strong, virile and committed organisation that will continue to champion the sustainable emancipation of the African women.

At this point ya'll can start getting pissed of at WAELLE for their recognition of Jammeh, Mind you it is not a Gambian based organization, the professional world recognizes false and faulty accusations levied against leaders my friends, the award is well deserved................................Peace
