By: Saikou Ceesay

A regional conference was held in the Senegalese capital of Dakar on "Harmonization of legal instruments against FGM .Consolidating achievements, sharing success, pursuing advances, towards a United Nations ban on FGM," from the 3rd and 4th May 2010 at the National Assembly of Senegal.

"The aim of the conference is to present and share the actions and strategies undertaken since the adoption of the Protocol to the African charter on human and peoples’ rights on the rights of women (Maputo protocol) as an example of African countries’ commitment", according to a press release sent to The Daily News.

A delegation of four Gambian parliamentarians with the executive director of Gamcotrap, Dr.Isatou Touray left for Dakar to participate in a two day regional conference. This conference according to the release is geared towards consolidating the achievements, share the successes and pursue the advances in legislative measures taken in a number of African countries.

The Gambian delegation comprised honorable Sedia Jatta, Hon. Adama Cham, and Chairperson of the parliamentary select committee on health, Hon. Sekouna Sanneh and Hon. Ousman Bah both members of the parliamentary select committee on health and women and children respectively.

During the conference The Gambian delegation had the opportunity for sharing experiences amongst the participating parliamentarians, civil society leaders and government representatives and forged a path towards a UN General Assembly resolution banning FGM, and considering the elements for inclusion in such a resolution.

It stated that the delegates are expected to consolidate a common path and to ensure that African achievements are reflected in the drafting of UN General Assembly resolution to ban FGM worldwide by giving focus on regional and sub-regional level of cooperation.

The Executive Director of Gamcotrap, Dr. Isatou Touray presented a paper on "law reform process on women’s rights".

The inter parliamentary conference is organized by the Senegalese ministry of family, food security, women’s entrepreneurship, micro finance and children and an international NGO, No Peace Without Justice ( NPWJ) in partnership with the Senegalese NGO la palabre.

It could be recalled that FGM affects the sexual and reproductive health of women and girls and it is a violation of human rights.
