EDUCATION BUDGET DEDUCTED NAMs Express Worries By Amie Sanneh
Members of the National Assembly have expressed worries over the deduction of the Education budget as revealed by the Permanent Secretary at the Department of State for Education, while presenting a paper on “Education in The Gambia” at an international seminar on the contribution of Parliamentarians to Education for All (EFA) held at the Palm Groove Hotel.
The Member for Jarra West Constituency Kemeseng Jammeh said Parliamentarians should not just cry foul over the slash of the Education budget by 50 percent, but they should do something about it.
He added that this slash from the budget is an attempt to usurp the responsibilities of the National Assembly, noting that they should have been aware of it.
Mr. Jammeh maintained that the slicing of the provision of the education budget single handedly is uncalled for.
He however called on his colleagues to pry into the matter in order to know the reason why it has been deducted.
Also expressing concern over the deduction, the majority leader of the National Assembly Churchill Baldeh, said deducting 50 percent from the education budget is almost paralyzing the whole situation.
He added that for such an important budget to be cut by 50 percent is worrying.
He remarked that if the state is doing such a thing on its own, then it is not the right thing.
“We are the only authority that can cut budget,” he said.
Mr. Baldeh pointed out that Parliamentarians need to be on top of all these things. Some other members of the National Assembly also expressed their concerns and worries over the dedication.
The Permanent Secretary at the Department of State for Education, later said the budget cut is not by 50 but by a quarter of 20 per cent.
He said the reason why it was deducted is due to the fact that the revenue did not come as it was expected. He revealed that another reason why it was deducted is that, it coincided with the African Union (AU) Summit, which he said is going to take a lot of funding.
Mr. Bouy however said that it is not only the education sector, which has been deducted, but from other sectors too.

I am sad to hear this, education is so important. Can I ask when was the budget cut. i understand when the announcement was made but when did it come into effect. If they cut the budget to pay for the AU, it must have been decided a while ago. A 25$million hotel to house officials who will attend, transportation, food and entertainment. I think these cuts will make a dent in education for a number of years to come.

Perhaps the cut is going to be directed towards the rulal electrification project. Education is apparently the most important area where the government should concentrate its efforts rather than hosting this useless AU summit.
What gain is it there for us that surpasses our priority over education? |

PATHETIC! USELESS NAMs. POLITICAL PROSTITUTES! NO CROCODILE TEARS!. THIS IS REASON MORE WHY THIS GOV'T SHOULD BE SHOWN THE DOOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. THEY SHOULD ALL RESIGN HONOURABLY NOW IF THIS INCOMPETENT GOV'T CAN DO SUCH A SADISTIC THING WITHOUT THERE KNOWLEDGE OR AUTHORITY. CHURCHILL SHOULD NOT SHED ANY MORE CROCODILE TEARS. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
ONE THING THAT SADDENS ME A LOT IS THAT A SOLUTION IS NOT IN SIGHT. WITH A COALITION WHICH WAS A BEACON OF HOPE IS NOW IN TATTERS! GAMBIANS SHOULD EMULATE HALIFA AND HIS LIKES FOR: SELFLESS SERVICE, PATRIOTISM, HONESTY. UNLESS OUR POLITICIANS IN THE OPPOSITION ARE PREPARED TO SACRFICE FOR THE FUTURE AND GAMBIANS WE WILL ALWAYS HAVE GOV'TS COME AND GO LEAVING ALL OF US STRANDED.
THIS CUT WILL DEAL EDUCATION A HEAVY BLOW ! THUS HIGHER ILLITERACY AND INCREASED POVERTY! |

Shame to all the NAMs. Many of our schools lack the basic resources to function. hardly any of the high schools can boast of a moderate scienc lab. Basic stuff like solutions are not available. How do you expect to graduate doctors when basic stuff like stetoscopes are scare at RVH. Forget about gloves. They are non existent. You will find Nurses attending to patients without adequate protection.
There are times when even paper to print letters is a problem. I have seen officers loaning A4 papers from other offices until their quartely budgets are approved. One new thing in budget allocations is that istaed of a yearly budget being made available, the approved budget is dished out in four instalment beacuse of lack of funds.
Some delays are due to non existence of paper or because the printer has no ink. I have seen this happen and is still happening. Only those projects being financed by the world bank or imf or foreign banks tend to have basic stationery.
in the light of all that, we can waste millions to tell the world we are not cheap when officers are seen across the quadrangle begging for paper or catridges. Mean while specially designed Hummers are riding on pot holes as big as Arch 22. If you not know your destination, any direction is good. |
