Opposition Leaders Dodge Scolding Jammeh to Free Femi Peters?
By Saikou Jammeh

The Gambia’s opposition leaders have avoided reproaching President Jammeh to free Mr. Femi Peters, a jailed renowned opposition figure.
Mr. Femi Peters, UDP campaign manager was convicted last month, after being found guilty of organising a political rally without police permit.
His sentenced to one-year imprisonment and D10, 000 fine has created a re-focus on the country’s failing democracy amid condemnations from both within and outside the country.
The Daily News news-desk has learnt that under the auspices of the Inter-Party Committee - comprising all political parties with a mandate to settle dispute among the existing parties - political party leaders, including the ruling party have met this Month to map-out a way to secure Mr. Peters’ release.
The committee reached a consensus to form a delegation to meet President Jammeh to pardon Femi peters, but none of the opposition party leaders is included in the delegation except Lamin Waa Jawara, the leader of the opposition NDAM party, who was once the strongest critic of the ruling party, but now viewed by many as a looming ally.
Though the Daily news is yet to establish why party leaders eluded the proposed rapprochement. What is clear is that the committee opted that prominent religious and civic leaders should meet the president to resolve existing political conflicts, including appealing to Jammeh to pardon Femi Peters.
"Prominent and venerable civic and religious leaders should be appointed and given the mandate to fix an appointment with the President, either directly through their own initiatives or through a letter emanating from the Secretariat of the Inter-Party Committee," the committee says in a letter available to this paper.
Those recommended to be part of the delegation pending their acceptance were Imam Ratib of Banjul Alh. Cherno Kah, Bishop of the Anglican Church Bishop Tilewa Johnson, Bishop of the Catholic Church Bishop Robert Patrick Ellison, Bishop of the Methodist Church Bishop Norman Grigg, President of Supreme Islamic Council Imam Muhammed Lamin Touray, Mr. Assan Musa Camara and Lamin Waa Juwara.
Mr. Juwara, the leader of the opposition NDAM who has confirmed the story said he agreed with the proposed quest for a pardon, but opposed the idea of involving others.
"The committee in their quest to secure the release of Femi Peters is honourable, but I totally disagree with the method with which we want to do it," said Mr. Juwara.
"I don’t see the need to call on the religious or civic leaders to mediate in this matter. If we are honest to ourselves, I don’t see any reason why we, as political leaders of this country cannot see President Jammeh, when villagers, farmers, Kabilolu and even footballers have been meeting him.
"Involving others to secure Femi Peters’ release will show our failure as political leaders of this country," he said.
He called on the committee members to re-think facing Jammeh to secure Femi’s release and stop "foot dragging".

It is wrong to beg Jammeh pardon innocent people as though there are no legal exits. Jammeh is not fair in treating people like he is doing.

Good to see Femi Peters free but not pardoned by Jammeh. Peter was not wrong in the first place.

The criminal Yaya Jammeh who staged a coup is the one that needs facing the laws. That day is bound to come.
