Dr. Lenri Peters to be Honored
By: Saikou Jammeh

The Ebunjan Theatre Troupe is organising a Theater Dinner Fundraising event in memory of late Dr. Lenri Peters, dubbed father of Gambian literature. The event is slated May 1st 2010, to be held at Jerma Beach hotel in Senegambia.

This was disclosed to journalists by Auntie Janet, the Troupe’s Artistic Director at a press briefing held on Friday at Tango.

Dr. Peters, The Gambia’s renowned poet and a professional surgeon died May 27th last year. He was a renowned writer, who authored two novels and many poems. He was also a performing artist.

The event according to Janet would feature a comic opera called "Trial by Jury" by Gilbert and Sullivan, and selected poems of Dr. Peters would be read as well.

Auntie Janet told journalists that Lenri donated D120, 000 to Ebunjan prior to his death towards the developing of a theater. She said work is in progress in constructing the theater, as they have spent about D2 million. And the proceeds from the event will be used to complete it.

According to her, the lack of theatre in country has greatly hindered the development of Arts in the country.

Wonderful and thoughtful idea
Salutations to Ebunjan Theatre Troupe
It is true that the lack of organized forms of art has taken a toll on artistic development and a hinder to a genuine cultural discourse in the Gambia.

JAnko, I look forward too for the opening of a theatre in the country. It is long overdue.
