Dailynews Editorial: We are One Year Today
It deserves a sober reflection from Day One of this paper, down to where we are today. One year ago, a news paper was born in the streets of the Gambia dubbed "The Daily News". It was the latest to join the array of newspapers that are already dominating the market. Hence the biggest challenge then was how to carve a niche in an otherwise saturated market of newspapers.
Today, twelve months down the line, that challenge has gone with the whirlwind, giving way to other multiple challenges. Despite the limited resources at the disposal of the Publisher, the paper managed to survive a tumultuous journey from its First Edition to the 118th Edition today. From the used (second hand) furniture to computers, the team of staff has been steadfast in giving the Gambian public a paper that would be worth every penny of their money spent on it.
Financing a publication like ours has not been an easy task. From access to finance to availability of equipment like printers and computers necessary to enable the staff do their work with efficiency; to print materials like plates and news print, the task of publishing has indeed been daunting! Talk of staff remuneration, among other things and you will have an idea of what it entails to deliver over a hundred editions of newspaper on the streets consistently over the period. But thank God, today we are one year old and we will continue to double our efforts to deliver on our promise to give what might represent the best form of independent journalism in our dear paper – The Daily News.
To the sacrifices, sweats and other efforts of the dedicated staff of the paper, Cheers! Through our teamwork, The Daily News is today being appreciated by the general public as a leading independent newspaper in the country. This is serving as moral booster to the staff here – for our work to be appreciated in whatever way. However, it is not all in itself, we have also taken a solemn pledge to make it Number One. And that pledge we will live up to!
We will do our best to make this paper an envy of many others. We will endeavor to improve on the news content in terms of quality, relevance, timeliness, etc. We will also endeavor to make it a daily publication so that you, the public will be able to have the paper as a breakfast each day of the week. We will endeavor to improve on the style of news presentation and other things related to this noble job of ours; the paper’s outlook in terms of design and color; its circulation to reach many and diverse readership; to meet the expectations of our dear advertisers and subscribers, among other things.
Above all, we would want to maintain and improve on our job of educating and informing the public, serve as its watch dog in all ramifications; keep the government accountable to the governed, inspire public debates on issues of concern to our development aspirations as a nation, keep recording events and facts as social historians. We will continue doing this job with the belief that we are contributing to what will make the Gambia the best out of the rest. For it is our homeland and nothing else.

Daily News Clocks 1 year By Mamadi B. Camara
The Daily News’ tremendous success in the media fraternity in the country has been lauded by Gambians from various walks of life as the paper celebrates first year of existence. Here we bring you diverse views of people as the paper clocks one year on this date and week.
Aloa Ahmed Alota - Executive Director, Gambia Press Union, noted that the paper is a good one as it always publishes issues that are of concern and relevance to the people. "Initially it was a bi-weekly paper and now three times which means the management and staff are hardworking people," he said. The paper could become a daily paper soon since the guys within are all devoted. He also commends the Editor and Publisher Mr. Madi M.K. Ceesay, and his staff for their enthusiasm.
Interestingly, the publisher/editor of The Daily News is currently in the United Kingdom for a two-week holiday. Mr. Madi Ceesay left last Tuesday, describing his holiday as a "two week break after a year-long work". At the end of this two weeks holiday, he is expected to attend a week-long conference in Italy before returning to Banjul.
"I have to thank my staff for the hard work over the period," he told Saikou Jammeh of our news room before his departure. "My credit also goes to all those who have contributed to the success of the paper, including vendors, advertisers, and readers."
He also extended his heartfelt greetings to Mr. Swaebou Conateh, Editor/Publisher of News & Report Magazine whom he described as his mentor, along with "all the sister newspapers in the country".
Mr. Moses Obawunmi – Lecturer at Trust Communication Training Institute said he is a keen reader of the paper, noting that the information published by the paper is legitimate and making it one of the best papers in the country. He stated that more effort needs to be done on the layout department emphasizing that if the front page is attractive, then the customers would go in for it, and gradually it will become the leading paper.
Kebba Yorro Manneh, a social commentator, educationalist by profession and youth and sports activist is one of the contributors to the paper. He said he was very impressed at the initiation of such a publication by Madi, "because I knew the dynamism of your managing director and that he would come out with the truth and nothing but the truth. That is the main reason why I am interested in your paper and keep on writing my articles on issues of concern for national development.
In an interview with Binta A Bah, Mr. Manneh said "Infact the paper is great with a bright start and I’m happy that young people like you and a lot more others are coming up quickly, which will gradually improve the paper. The articles I read in your paper are very good and impressive."
In Mr. Manneh’s view, the way forward is to get a lot of money, employ lots of people not only from the greater Banjul Area but going into the provinces. "I would have been very comfortable sitting in Janjanbureh and giving you information, but you see we are overcrowded here. One thing that The Daily News can do is to get reporters in the rural areas in all regions to facilitate the work. Being only in the greater Banjul area is not enough for what happens in regions are hardly reported. I want The Daily News to do more… brace up and go right into the hinterland and get more news," he said.
Lamin Njie and Mr. Nyassi - Foroyaa Accountants - explained that they read every edition "and the staff has done a wonderful job in promoting the dreams of the publisher as they have been loyal and dedicated to their work and profession". They however advised the young dynamic and energetic staff to see the paper as theirs and work hard inorder to maintain their position.
Fatoumata Drammeh - (Timbooktoo) said The Daily News is doing well in the media arena, as people received the most important news which is also accurate and balance. She said the paper only needs support to become fully daily paper, as well as go in search of more adverts.
Musa Darboe, a vendor thanked God the almighty for giving them the opportunity to witness the one year anniversary, saying that all that he can do is to pray for the success of the paper. Darboe further noted "the late arrival of the papers" which is hampering their business.
Bakary Aba Sanneh, Manager of the paper said he thanked the Almighty since starting this paper on April 6th 2009 to date. To him, this has been a great achievement despite some challenges: "Due to the team work and passion, we are today observing this great day of ours."
Mr. Sanneh added that the management is even planning to come in a colour in order to attract more customers, as most of the papers are now in colour. He thanked the manager of The Point Newspaper Pap Saine, and his staff for their support.

The Daily News is One Year Old
I write to congratulate the staff and management of The Daily News on their one year anniversary April 6th 2010. It was exactly one year ago yesterday when the Daily News, a bi-weekly newspaper hit the newsstands of the Gambia. We owe the success of the Daily News to all the esteem readers, advertisers, reporters, management and staff of the newspaper.
This paper started on a twice weekly basis from April 6th to December 31st 2009. Due to the demand from both our readers and advertisers we decided to go thrice weekly as a New Year gift, there and then we went into the new year of January 2010 as thrice. Today the daily news can be read on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays each week. Well before coming thrice a week, way back in August 2009, management decided to go online, after only operating for four months, a record until today is unique to the Daily News. We can be read on www.dailynews.gm.
65 Kombo Sillah Drive Churchill’s Town address. It goes to show that the success of the Daily News is not all mine but exclusively yours (Staff) as you can see as far as I am in the United Kingdom the Daily News is regular and as accurate as possible. I thank you all (dedicated staff) of the Daily News.
Newspaper journalism is not all that easy in our dear country. Faced with several unacceptable, and unfriendly media laws, one can easily fall victim. Many of our colleagues have left the shores of their dear motherland not because they love to but rather it is because they are forced to do so. Journalists like any other people are also patriotic and would like to develop this country to what ever level.
If the right environment is created and better working conditions available believe me we the journalists can beat any other person in nation building. We have contributed from the days of the struggle for our independence through the first republic to the present day. People have to be informed and informed well in order to make better decisions. So the media is never left out in nation building. As one former American president said, he prefers a state without a government, than one without a press. This goes to tell how important our roles as journalists are.
Today the media is being muzzled by the promulgation of laws that are restrictive, laws that can easily make them victims. Until bad media laws are ex-punged from our books of law we stand to be sidelined and can be a victim to who ever wanted to see us down. We needed a law that is not asking any bond, a bond that is in the tune of five hundred thousand dalasis (D500, 000.00) is this not outrageous? How can anybody imagine that to operate a newspaper in this country, one is expected to meet the above?
In Ghana for instance, no body needs such to operate a newspaper, so why do we in The Gambia need to? Are we different from them, or is there any other reason or reasons responsible for it? I am interested to know if there are reasons.
My dear readers to have a progressive state, we needed a vibrant media. No state can be proud of a vibrant democracy without a vibrant media. One cannot be assured of man’s rights if there is a weak media.
There are two rights that are competing, one holds that rights are given by God , and therefore can only be removed by the entity that created them in the first place; the other holds that man’s rights comes from man himself and therefore can be limited or removed by man or by other men, as determined by law.
Therefore, the man who wishes to protect his rights from those who wish to limit them must protect himself and his human rights by creating an agency that has the power to exceed that exerted by those who violate human rights. The agency created is called government. But granting power to government to protect human rights also grants power to those who can abuse it as a vehicle to destroy or limit the rights of the people who created the government.
I conclude that we are protected in all our endeavors so that we keep on educating ourselves and those of our readers. Therefore we must continue to educate ourselves more; otherwise we shall fail to educate others.
I wish you all a happy anniversary.
