The Gambia-Security-Sackings

Gambia leader removes police chief, navy commander, others

APA-Banjul (The Gambia) Gambian president Yahya Jammeh has embarked on a big shake up of the security forces with the removal on Tuesday of six senior army and police officers, including the Commander of the Gambia Navy and the Inspector General of Police, Rear Admiral Sarjo Fofana and Ensa Badjie respectively.

This comes less than 24 hours after the removal of the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Gambia Armed Forces, Major General Yankuba Drammeh.

As usual, there were no official reasons given for these high profile removals.

Also late last year, the Army Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Lang Tombong Tamba and several other senior police and military officials were removed, and since then, General Tamba and some of his colleagues are in detention, even though they have still not been taken to court or charged with any offence.

Meanwhile, according to a press release issuded here Tuesday by the government, President Jammeh also appointed the former Police Crime Management Coordinator Yankuba Sonko as new Inspector General of Police and Lieutenant Colonel Sillah Kujabbi has been appointed as acting Navy Commander.

Former IGP, five military officers detained

Thursday, March 04, 2010
Family sources have confirmed to this paper the arrest of Ensa Badjie, former Inspector General of Police, Rear Admiral Sarjo Fofona, former Commander of the Gambia Navy, along with four other military officers, at the time of going to press.

The four other military officers reportedly arrested are Colonel Mam Matarr Secka, Commander of the military police, Major Kuluteh Manneh of the Army Headquarters, Lt. Famara Jasseh of the Army Headquarters, and Lt. Colonel Abdoulie Jatta of the Gambia National Guards.

It would be recalled that President Yahya Jammeh on Tuesday dismissed the former IGP and the five members of the Gambia Armed Forces from the police force and armed forces.

A family source told our reporter, who visited the families, "My father has not returned home since he went to work on Tuesday."

Another one said: "It's true! We are told that they were arrested."

This dismissal and arrest of the six security officers follows the arrest of Lang Tombong Tamba, former Chief of Defence Staff of the Gambia Armed Forces in November 2009.

Tamba was arrested alongside Momodou Badjie, former Director General of the country's National Intelligence Agency, Modou Gaye, former Deputy Inspector General of Police, Lt Colonel Kawsu Camara, Kanilai Camp Commander, and Brigadier-General Omar Bun Mbye, all of them detained, since their arrest last November.

When contacted the Army PRO Lt. Beyai said: "I only know of their dismissal but not their arrest."

Police PRO Secka also said: "No, I don't know anything concerning these people."

It could be recalled that last Friday, Major General Yankuba Drammeh, Deputy Chief of Defence Staff of the Gambia Armed Forces was also sacked.

This is unfortunately the reality of Jammeh's Gambia. The whole country is awashed with corruption, narcotics and dirty money. It now easy to understand how real eastate and other businesses are funded. Gambia today is comparable to Miami of the 60s when the Cosa Nostra, Columbian and Cuban drugs cartels laid siege to that city. Miami became the fastest growing city on the planet overnight. The city's skyline changed swell as criminals seized the opportunity to launder dirty money in real estate with high storey buildings and executive mansions dominating the city's coastal line. The swelling number of banks and money men sruggled to cope with the amount of money in circulation. Ever watched Scarface with Al Pacino? That was Miami then. The city was strewn with narcotics, junkies, casinos and corpses as gangs and cartel fight to control their turf while murder was reported by the second. A whole generation become hooked on drugs. Prostitution, racketeering, gambling and corruption was the order of the day. Mayors, City Councilors, Judges, Policemen, Military men, Bankers and politicians were corrupted. The whole society was a melting pot of chaos. This is exacctly what is happening in today's Gambia. The above mentioned case is just a tip of the iceberg. To be appointed a senior government official is a path to getting rich quick. They don't rely on the monthly remunerations as a primary source of income anymore. They wipe their fat arses with that chicken change instead. The dollar and the euro are the unofficial currency of today's Gambia. Landlords, businesses and shopkeeper are demanding to be paid in foreign currency. It is therefore an insult to our intelligence for the President to pretend not to know that the country is a narco state, when he most likely personally benefited for narcotic gains. It is only when he was led to belive that drugs money was used to finance an attempted overthrow of his government that he is crying foul. You have just fcuked the lives of a generation Mr President, while a good percentage of your top officials in the civil service coke heads. From security personnel, to Judges and Magistrates, Ministers and Perm Secs. Gambians on honest salaries including diaspora Gambians cannot afford a piece of land since the drugs cartels took over the real estate business. One thing i'd like to know in the above litigation is whether Amadou Samba, Willy Mbam, Omar Ndow, Aaron David Wright, Mohammed Ceesay, Ikemefuna, Ousainou Tajudeen and others will be charged, because they are legally implicated as abetting, participating and colluding in criminal activity with senior government officials.
