I was interested to get lots of emails from a friend yesterday. She lives in Pirang and says they dont have to go to Brikama anymore, someone has opened an internet cafe in Pirang. Isnt that fantastic? It is making the world a smaller place and making information pass around much more quickly. She knew about Haiti and she knew about the Religious leaders in Mauritania speaking out against FGM. I think the internet access will transform the speed of change in Gambia as it spreads across the country.
Full marks to the owner of this Cafe, this will make personal communication between people much more effective, the Gambian Post Office tries its hardest I know but it is a bit like a sieve and cannot perform effectively,I am sure that the owner has realised the potential for the business if they provide a basic internet teaching programme for the people of Pirang. The younger folk and students will benefit a great deal.Although the internet is running in The Gambia speeds are slow,I do not know if it because cafe owners want people pay to have more time or if it is technical,it works yes,but I have found that 30mins is required just to check and give a short reply to one or two e mails, download speeds appear poor.Any readers able to shed any light on this ?
"Simple is good" & I strongly dislike politics. You cannot defend the indefensible.
I think it's definitely technical! I have had to wait ages for things to load but only at certain times of the day - when the businessess are also using the internet. Broadband speed problem - same here in some places too. But yes, I think internet is fab and access for more people is great.
