This is culled from the Observer newspaper to share opinions. However what a disgrace as it has no relevance in the political context of the Gambia and not useful to us as far as I see it? There is nothing we could learn or use to sort out our political crises rather than trying to impressed with a futile intellectual exercise and dis-orientate the students further. Am not impressed with these types of intellectuals. We just need basic education and nothing else in my own opinion. Finally we have more micro issues and troubles to consider at home rather than macro or big politics of the world order.
world at war Dr Taal
Written by Marcel Mendy Friday, 05 May 2006 Dr Saja Taal, a senior lecturer at the University of The Gambia who doubles as the Managing Director of the Observer Company Limited, has opined that a Third World War is in the offing. He made this assertion yesterday at a conference organised by the students of the University of The Gambia as part of their students' union week celebrations at the President's Award Scheme Centre in Bakau. In his paper entitled: "The world is plunged into acute instability and insecurity. How can world peace be maintained?" Dr Taal said unfolding events show that a Third World War is looming. He added that problems of peace and conflicts at national, regional and international levels are enough to put the whole world on the alert. He however hastened to argue that conflict in itself is not bad but can be so if it erupts into violence in society and the world at large. According to him, ethnopolitic, discrimination of the minority, denial of freedom and poverty are at the root of Africa's underdevelopment. "Ethnopolitics, discrimination, poverty and denial of freedom are the main factors that cause most of the hardships and conflicts we are beset with in our world today. Lack of equity is causing poverty in Africa and this is moving the world closer to the Third World War because it is expressing itself at regional and international levels and yet the international community seems unable to solve it. Indeed, the UN is one of the causes of conflicts in the world because it's not right for a peace organisation to possess dangerous weapons against humanity. Also, why should the UN allow few nations to be in full control of the destiny of others? This in reality is pushing the world to a war," he said. Dr Taal added: "Dependence subjects Africa to perpetual poverty and blackmail by international organisations. There should be equity before world peace. The world is faced with a moral crisis and conflict. Nuclear energy or technology, despite its great importance, has to be given a second thought because it can have some devastating effects on human beings," he said.
