AG Chambers Takes Over Judges’ Case
By Fabakary B. Ceesay on 06-01-10
The Director of Public Prosecutions under the office of the Attorney General, has announced his intention to take over the prosecution of three criminal cases against three former judicial staff.
On Monday 4th January 2009, the DPP Richard N Chenge , told Magistrate Emmanuel Nkea of the Banjul Magistrates’ Court that his office may consolidate all the charges of the three cases.
The three cases are as follows: Madam Justice Amina Saho Ceesay is accused of stealing an amount of D2 million and one thousand United States Dollars, being the property of The Gambia, during her tenure at the Sheriff Division between the years 2005 to 2009.
Mr. Haruna Jaiteh, the Former Judicial secretary, is accused of stealing D1, 117,000 (one million, one hundred and seventeen thousand dalasis).
Another accused person in the same case, Justice Njuie Mboob Janneh, is charged with stealing D803,000 and 900 pound sterling’s (Eight Hundred and three Thousand, Nine Hundred Pound Sterling’s). They were all charged with stealing by clerk or servant contrary to section 258 of the Criminal Code.
In his submission, DPP Chenge also added that he is yet to receive the auditors report concerning the case. He noted that he is sure that the auditor’s report would be available to him within the next ten days. He applied for an adjournment.
Defence Counsels Lamin S. Camara appearing for Mr. Haruna Jaiteh and Madam Hajum Gaye, representing Mrs. Amina Saho Ceesay did not object to the DPP ‘s application. Camara however, argued that the state should endeavour to serve the defence with the new charges by the next sitting date.
The case is adjourned to 15th January.
