News & Report Crowns Jaliba Says he’s the nation’s musical voice By Saikou Jammeh
The Gambia News and Report Weekly magazine has awarded the Gambia’s Kora Maestro Jaliba Kuyateh as the magazine’s “Man of the year 2009”.
The man of the award is an yearly activity of News & report since its inception in 1992 and has since then decorated many people who in the words of the publisher have: “… through their works/professions or personal endeavor are judged to have contributed the most to the public welfare and to advancing the country’s development in the interest of all Gambians.
In a letter conveyed to the Gambia’s finest cultural displayer in present day Gambia, the publisher of News & Report Mr. Swaebou Conateh put forward many expositions for his choice of Jaliba Kuyateh, the leader of Kumareh Band.
According to him Jaliba Kuyateh with a modern educational background, developed his own brand of music of the Kora to a level never known and standing out as the most innovative, creative and fascinating player of the instrument in today’s Gambia and sub-region.
“Been known to perform the rare feat of singing and playing the Kora simultaneously and can be acrobatic while playing the instrument, sometimes even using his teeth or leaning all the way down as he plays it”, the oldest practicing journalist in The Gambia there describing Jaliba.
Conateh goes on: “And watching him in action is a spectacle one cannot easily forget,” adding that with Jaliba’s overwhelming stage presence, flawlessly swinging around, jump up and down and dance rhythmically while at all times in full control”.
Noting that Jaliba whose name mean “big musician” in his own dialect has attained high regard in official, non-official and international circles and believes is the nation’s musical voice, remain the most available player despite his crowded schedule.
He sings songs replete with words of wisdom and guidance, according the publisher and as well as progressive causes for national unity and development such as women’s affairs, education, health, gender empowerment and the environment.
Mr. Conateh pointing to various awards Jaliba bagged both nationally and regionally as well as his recognition locally and internationally, says Jaliba has satisfied the criteria for the award.
As he put it among others “…and since we believe that like some other prominent leaders of the past, your story will remain for Gambians an important example of good leadership, to serve as a point of reference in terms of service to the nation, we take this opportunity to salute you for what you have been able to achieve in the annals of our country.
The publisher mentions the previous “man of the year” awardees since 1992, namely: Amadou Samba, of GACEM, Pa Sallah Jagne, Dr. Ebrima Samba, the late Lenri Peters, Lamin Waa Juwara, leader NDAM, Isatou Njie Saidy, vice President, Bye Lamin Jobe, Mrs. Harriet Ndow, Imam Karamo Touray of Brikama, Hassan B. Jallow, lawyer, Ousman B. Conateh, Muhammed Jah, late Deyda Hydara, Pa Sallah Jeng, Bolong Sonko, and Mustapha Njie (joint winners), President Yahya Jammeh and Dr. Isatou Touray, Executive Director GAMCOTRAP.
