I think open homosexuality is still largely unacceptable in most of Africa. With inceasing sense of personal freedom and equal human rights (more gays are coming out of the closset), fueled by increasing media access (spreading stories about gays), intolerance for homosexuality will rise to a peak in Africa. It will then become more acceptable as understanding increases. This is what happened in many Western countries, some of which like the U.S. is still struggling with equal rights for homosexuals...
except for uganda/gambia/zimbabwe? such a huge sea-change in attitude is required, that one wonders if this can ever really happen without so many other reforms. Look at Joburg. African country, open gay and lesbian presence, but it is more "first-worldly" than so many of the countries practicising such discrimination. can you rellay EVER see gay men walking down the main road in Banjul ? Maybe.... but maybe so many other things would have to occur before the mindset of the population cared to try and understand the reality of such peoples rights.
