Robert Mugabe coming to Copenhagen 20. nov. 2009

One of the more controversial guests at the UN climate summit in Copenhagen next month will be Zimbabwe's much criticized president, Robert Mugabe. The Zimbabwean embassy in Stockholm confirms this to daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten.
Although the Zimbabwean president and a number of other members of his political party have been refused entry into the European Union, this has not previously stopped Mugabe from obtaining special exemptions for going to Brussels.
Frequent summit participant 85-year old Robert Mugabe also participated in this week's UN food summit in Rome. And since the Copenhagen climate summit is a UN conference, Mugabe will automatically be included in the UN provisions on diplomatic immunity for the duration of the summit.
The background is a UN convention dating from 1946, which grants safe passage in connection with UN summits to state leaders that have been blacklisted, or are wanted by the police.
The EU placed Zimbabwe under sanctions in 2002 due to the Mugabe-led government's violations of human rights.
