Oppositions Calls For National Conference
By Musa Badjie

The National Youth President of the United Democratic Party Momodou Lamin Nyassi (alias Shyngle) has urged opposition parties to come up with a National Conference so as to make their aspiration and wishes to the Gambians clearer.

According to Nyassi, the failure of opposition parties to unite under the banner of NADD in the run-up to the 2006 Presidential Pools was not caused by the UDP and its alliance partner NRP but rather, there are others who are just seeking positions in the name of the opposition in the country.

In an interview with the Daily News at his Residence in Brikama Daruhairu, Nyassi said there are oppositions in the Gambia who are committed to the democratization, the rule of law and good governance whilst there are others who are just seeking positions in the name of the opposition in the country. This he said, was evidenced by incidents that happened to opposition members who joined APRC.

He indicated that such people used other opposition members to acquire what he called ‘fine positions’ in the system. Every Gambian according to him, needs a change through democracy which is clearly manifested when the UDP made a country wide tour which he described as successful. “The welcome, solidarity and support really explained that Gambians need change and are ready for change if the oppositions put their houses in order,” he indicated.

He expressed his dissatisfactions to opposition leaders who abandon their parties and take up positions in the government as Councilors anticipating for more of such finer positions. “What will the Gambians say? Those oppositions are to be blamed for whatever disunity within the opposition ranks because they call themselves opposition parties which they are, but with hidden agendas. So for Gambians to say the opposition had disappointed them is not fair…”for those who are committed to the principle of democracy and rule of law for the interest of Gambians.

Nyassi further indicated that he is happy that Gambians are paying attentation to a credible alternative to the APRC government in the opposition and want them to unite because they have realized their mistakes and want us to join forces in order for changes to be effected. He appealed to all Gambians to work together and play their citizenry roles of keeping their oppositions on their toes by making them accountable for decisions and actions that impact their livelihoods. He said it should be along such lines that oppositions to come together and put up a single candidate in the 2011 presidential elections.

He was however quick to add that the UDP is open to any credible coalition that will be determined to end dictatorship and bad governance system in the Gambia. He appealed to all opposition parties to bury their political differences and ideologies in other to salvage Gambians from the ugly head of the APRC dictatorship that has take roots in the Gambian society since July 22nd 1994.

He urged all Gambian youths to be cautious of how APRC government is exploiting them noting that it is the responsibility of every Gambian to come out in full force and campaign against the APRC in the 2011 elections. This he said which will be a test and one of the toughest elections ever for the APRC.

The UDP is ready and will monitor all the registration processes from the beginning to the end.
