Army PRO Refutes Arrest of General Tamba, Others
By Musa Barrow

The Public Relation Officer (PRO) Gambia Armed Forces, Lt. Omar Bojang has refuted reports that Lt. General Lang Tombong Tamba and others, who were dismissed from Gambia Armed Forces last week, were arrested.

PRO Bojang speaking to this reporter described reports of the arrest of the dismissed members of Armed Forces as untrue and baseless.
The dismissed security officers whose arrest has been refuted by the Army PRO are Lt. General Lang Tombong Tamba, the Ex-CDS, Brigadier General Omar Bun Mbye, Colonel Demba Njie, Major Malamin Badjie and Captain Lamin Faati.

Furthermore, Army PRO Bojang also told this reporter that he was not aware of reports that some Gambian Security Personnels were shot in the Southern Senegalese Region of Casamance, allegedly by MFDC rebels, a separatist movement fighting for independence for the Casamance region.

Meanwhile, on the appointment of Major General Mr. Ebrima Bah as the Inspector General of the Armed Forces, PRO Bojang said the role of Inspector General of the Armed Forces is to oversee military establishments and installations within the Gambia Armed Forces prior to the creation to this post they have what they called director of inspectorate. So this new portfolio will be taking care of the director of inspectorate of the Armed forces.
Mr. Bah’s appointment was announced on Monday 12 October 2009.

Army PRO Quizzed on Ex-Capt Faati’s Arrest

Previous Report should be taken with a grain of salt

Two days after the Army PRO stated in no uncertain terms that none of the Senior Army Officers removed from their office had been arrested Foroyaa has been informed that Ex- Captain Faati has been arrested. When this reporter quizzed the Army PRO regarding the arrest of Ex -Captain Faati he said that he could only confirm or deny the arrest of personnel of the Army. He said Ex-Captain Faati is no longer in the army and argued that be could not give account of his whereabouts. This twist of circumstances has compelled Foroyaa to caution its readers to take the previous report of the Army PRO with a grain of salt. What the PRO refuted is the alleged arrest of personnel of the army. He has clarified that he cannot account for those ex-soldiers who are removed from the army. We are yet to confirm the whereabouts of Captain Faati but would continue our investigation.

Editor’s note
We hope family members would rely on the media to give accurate reports on any body under arrest. Foroyaa is out to expose any arrest and detention of a person without trial. The only way rumours could be avoided and detention without trial challenged is to report all such incidents to the media.
