The '09 Grade 12- West Africa Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE)- results were released a few weeks ago. Can someone please post a nationwide summary of the results.
The Gambian WAEC is doing a very poor job of maintaining its website.
Thanks Momodou, WAEC use to send out a press release summarizing students' grades when the results come out. I assuming the worst: The results were so poor that they are withholding it from the public.
It is so unfortunate that those kids could not pass Maths. Why do you think the results are gradually getting worse?
One of the factors I believe is overcrowding in the classes. I understand some have up to 70 students. The teacher will hardly have time to know the students and their weaknesses in such an environment.
Another factor is the lack of qualified teachers. Many good mathematicians prefer to go to other employment sectors because the teaching profession is not motivating for them.
A clear conscience fears no accusation - proverb from Sierra Leone
One of my boys got 5 credits and 2 passes but he failed maths too - so that limits his possibilities. He tries very hard but his family are very angry with him! I'm not - I think he has done well but I do have to say that I think there is a real problem with Maths teaching in Gambia.

It is really sad that mathematics isn't given the attention it needs.... I use to help a kid with further mathematics and was really disappointed with his maths skills. I'm a bad teacher though, I get pissed off when they can't understand the obvious.
Lily, is your boy going to one of the public schools? Try talking him into privately repeating math.
That was a good idea Prince and I've managed to talk it through with his parents (who talked to him) and he's going to re-sit maths and English (he got a pass) over the next year to try and get credits in both. I'm happy for this and so is the famiy. We have hired a private teacher with an excellent reputation who is also going to sort out his entrance to the exams (and I can check in December when I go that he's registered).
