This is is so quick in just a short time. Congratulations!!

Obama wins 2009 Nobel Peace Prize
US President Barack Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize.

The Nobel Committee said he was awarded it for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".

The committee highlighted Mr Obama's efforts to strengthen international bodies and promote nuclear disarmament.

There were a record 205 nominations for this year's prize. Zimbabwe's prime minister and a Chinese dissident had been among the favourites.

The laureate - chosen by a five-member committee - wins a gold medal, a diploma and 10m Swedish kronor ($1.4m).

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the Norwegian committee said as the prize was announced.

"His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

Asked why the prize had been awarded to Mr Obama less than a year after he took office, Nobel committee head Thorbjoern Jagland said: "It was because we would like to support what he is trying to achieve".

"It is a clear signal that we want to advocate the same as he has done," he said.

He specifically mentioned Mr Obama's work to strengthen international institutions and work towards a world free of nuclear arms.

It so nice of the committee to "encourage" him. I am also planning on developing a nuclear free electricity plant that won't emit CO2; Tell me people, where is my "encouragement?"

Ah well, the nobel peace prize is already seriously devalued. I mean, Yassar Arafat and Yitzhak Rabin won it. Henry Kissinger (arguably the worst human rights violator alive) also got it. So, yeah, Obama can keep his...

I'll start to support Obama if he do "half" of the good President Bush did for Africa!

What peace...?? Way too presumptive and premature for me...I think it was given to him and now he has to earn it...a cart is being pulled before the horse here...

I agree with mansaslulu, look at the timeline of this event, when do nominations close, what was it based on, uptil last year the outside world had not heard of him, he came from nowhere and won the election. read between the lines, Nominations closed 9 days after he won US elections, for me it has devalued the prize, Morgan chanchuri Zimbabwe should have won this,I cam see his efforts for peace, but Obama what peace deal

Obama can not guarantee peace nor create peace for the world all by himself, that much we know, for peace is what we gain together, all he can do solo is to be an inspiration, which he has been … that is the worth of the peace prize this time … so
