Gainde,
I was dying to watch this yesterday, but couldn't open it on my computer. Problem now fixed. Thanks a million for this post. I enjoyed it so much I watched it twice. This is real culture and epitomises bravery of our women just as the men show bravery during their own initiation rites. Thanks a lot. You have made a serere very happy.
Janko,
Absolutely. Where do you think the word Njam came from? Wolof! Fula! |

Thanks Janko and Tamsier. I do enjoy the videos as much. My mum is serere and I did learn some serere whilst doing a project work for save the children usa in Mbollet, Njongone, fass, Amdalai etc back in the 80s so I could use some serere language lessons.

Gainde, i watch all the videos. They are a good reminder of things then. So the Serere are master fisher men. The fula music reminds me of the days i use to visit remote villages where this musicians congregated playing to few and within minutes crowds will gather. very interesting. |

I need your help here, please, the closest I can come is that Njam, is wolof (fula ... jamtang). Another thing I want you to help me with (I do not intend to stray from the topic but I have to ask just this one, a beg).
A friend told me "Laubé" is no ethnic group but a trade, that any one can be a laubé. |

Ajaarama Mbaroodi(Gainde) for cultural works.
Janko, the njam referred to here is daasooro in mandinka , sort gum tatooing. mainly for the females but in some cultures its both male and female.
laube or loabeh, is a clan within the fulani ethnic group. They are tradesmen mainly doing carving, designing and making exotic lingeries and jewelleries e.g waistbeads for women etc

Janko,
Njam [the act], Njamkat [the person performing the act], Njamukat [the person whom the act is being performed on] are all serere words in origin. This is nothing new. There are loads of serere words found in the wolof language. Some examples: Nyam [food/eat sometimes used interchangbly with lek], Nyaambi [cassava - which is an extention of nyam], mbindaan [house servant] which derives from the serere word 'mbind' meaning house, for example 'Mbind Janko' [the house of Janko/Janko's house]. As for Laobe, Madiba has already answered.

Thanks Madiss & tamsier for your invaluable information. Am enchanted by the grammatical clarification of; Njamkat, Njamukat, thanks. |
