The Death Penalty Will be Implemented To The Letter
Madi MK Ceesay

On Sunday September, 20th 2009 immediately after the Edi prayers, Muslim elders gathered at the State House as tradition has it. At that meeting President Jammeh’s customary address touches on the rampant killings of innocent peoples.

The implementation of the death penalty which he said will be enforced soonest to act as a deterrent. Jammeh in a very strong and serious language told the elders that anyone who wants to destabilized the existing peace in the name of what ever they may call it will have that person’s head cut off, and wait for the so called west to talk as he fears no one except Allah. So far as I remain the head of the Gambia I will not sit to allow people disrupt our peace and tranquility.

President Jammeh told the Muslim elders that his government will implement the death penalty as it is not here to decorate our law books. “We are going to implement the death penalty to the letter” President Jammeh stressed. Very soon the so called human right campaigners will start talking about the right to life. But killers are killing innocent people one after the other and none of them is saying anything. Jammeh warns that his government will not compromise the rampant killings, rape, and drug dealings any longer.

The President told the elders that the Gambia can develop pass where we are but it all depend on people’s attitude towards work. He said it is surprising that in the whole of Kanifing Municipality, there are no Gambian butchers to kill and manage twenty one (21) animals. This came after a request from the Mayor of KMC who wanted more animals for the feast of Edi. Jammeh reiterated his call for Gambians to change their attitudes.

Jammeh said on a daily basis or weekly the BBC and CNN portraits Africans who die in high sea and many of those are said to be Gambians, this he said is disheartening. Jammeh said why are such happening? Another thing about this youths who go by the back way, is that even if they are deported these youths are determine to venture again even if they are to die. So what is the point for his government to spend on such a group of youths? “My government will not spend anymore money on such people, it is better to spend that money on other sectors and on hard working Gambians who are willing to work and develop our country” Jammeh said

Speaking on the disputes among Muslims as who is in control of what in Banjul, President Jammeh said Banjul Muslim Elders is the only group that his government recognizes. He warms the Muslims that who ever wanted to shake the peace and tranquility of this country, he will cut off that person’s head and no European can do anything about it. He said those who call for human right and democracy are killing innocent people in Afghanistan, a country that is not their land. They are doing all that because they do not want terrorists to go from those countries to their countries of origin, and they want me to allow such things in my country. President Jammeh said he will set an example by be heading any such trouble makers and no body can do a thing about it.

He said all the problems that we the Muslims are facing are cause by us, whether it is here or elsewhere. Any bomb that explodes in our places of worship is planted by us the Muslims. What kind of Muslims are we Jammeh asked? He cited countries like Afghanistan, Iraq where Muslims are killing one and other like dogs. The most disheartening thing is that all these were happening in the month of Ramadan. This is the kind of things, that will not happen here as far as I remain head of the Gambia, Jammeh stressed. He question how can we progress if we are giving Islam bad image and violating the tenants of Islam.

Jammeh applauded the decisions of the Supreme Islamic Council, of going by the calendar of Saudi Arabia. If that is accepted then that will be the law and practice , if anybody who does not want to pray according to such a calendar that person will not be allowed to observe Edi or Tobaski prayers here. He qualifies his argument by saying we are in the era of internet/radio and television. This are times when something happens miles away can be known within seconds. In the past where such are not available people rely on close neighbors for the sighting of the moon. Jammeh ask the Muslim elders to decide within a week and let him know. After all which Muslim will doubt the authenticity of Saudi Arabia sighting of the moon?

Before concluding he told his audience that he is vindicated, because his government was accused of pampering the children to an extent that the children are spoiled, but today more of the girls put on the veil during my times than before. And those girls are role models, so am vindicated. It is not like I am spoiling them but only wanted to inculcate our religious cultures into them. He warns that children have to be disciplined, and such disciplinary actions which are in conformity with our culture, is no way of violating the rights of the children.

President Jammeh gave a handsome amount of D210, 000.00 to the elders as their “SALIBO” He was quick to tell them to share the said amount there but it does not include members of government present.

The Vice President Aja Isatou Njie Saidy, in her intervention asked why during the Ramadan all goes well as far as our religion is concern, but as soon as the month is gone people go back to old habits. She urges the preachers to continue preaching as that is the only way out. She said many of the problems that happen among the Muslims are due to selfish ends. Many a time such problems and disputes are only about individuals who wanted to be heads of their mosques. This she said is disappointing, as such only occurs among us the Muslim.

She talked about the issue of the rampant killings which is referred to as alian. This is things which are strange in our midst. She also made mention of the numerous accidents which have cause many deaths. Madam Njie Saidy said drivers must try to limit their speed so as to avoid such road accidents. She commended the police for their untiring efforts.VP Njie Saidy caution compound owners to be careful of whom they lodge.

Isimala Sambou the Local government minister, said with regards to child rights, it is the responsibility of the parents like the elders who should respond to remarks made by out side people and organizations who are singing the rights of children. The training of our children to work on the farms is no way child labour. He said his own children from the age of seven up wards are all in the fields working. That is what should prevail all over. Sambou said such so call rights, should not stop parents asking their children to work. He said children are the future of the any country, and therefore people should take good care of them and give them the best training and up bring as possible

Wondering how to confess murder in public, it is only natural that the guilty killer takes a bold move by saying it loud. When he says he is ready to kill again, surely he will.

In what could be regarded as a gross misinformation, the comments made by the president just recently as part of his traditional koriteh meeting with Muslim elders in which he remarked that the death penalty in the constitution will be upheld to the letter, if murder continues to be a phenomenon in our society, has been distorted by one Chidi Anselm Odinkalu, a so called human rights advocate from the Open Society Initiative in an interview with the BBC recently. We therefore deemed it fitting as genuine citizens of this country, not only to expose the absence of credibility in that report but also to acertain the fact that such a report was based on mere fabrcations and is part of the ongoing propaganda by unscruplus elements in their bid to tarnish the decent image of the president and the country.

The comments of the president on the esclating number of murder cases is very clear. Such remarks can only strengthen the rule of law and the effective dispensation of justice and above all consolidate the role of the state in the administration of justice among its people. During that speech, the president did not utter any word that is contrary to the dictates of the consititution. What the president emphasised was that the death penalty in the constitution would be upheld to the letter if the esclating case of murder that is becoming a daily reality of life in the society is not halted. Besides, President Jameh did not put the death penalty in the constitution. The constitution was drafted and endosed by Gambians at a mass referendum.

It is therefore unfortunate that this Chidi Anselm Odinkalu fabricated his arrogant gabage to the BBC that President Jammeh has threatened to kill human rights defenders operating in the country, and even shamelessly went further to argue that the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights headquarters should be relocated from Banjul. We deem it prudent to shoulder the challenge of defending the truth in good faith and also expose this so called human rights defender as a story teller, because we are cognisant of the fact that such gabage of slander and defamantion, especially from an agent of imperialsim, does not only tarnish the personality of the president but also the image of this country.

Is Chidi Anselm Odinkalu ignorant of the fact that The Gambia has been hosting the African Commission on Human and People’s Rights for some decades now without any query. Human rights experts in this country are acorded diplomatic status and The Gambia is one of the few countries in the world today where all men are born free, dignified and act towards each other in the spirit of brotherhood. After all, who is he to tell us that The Gambia is under seige? Has he forgotten his own backyard where kidnapping and other human rights atrocities are parmanent realities of daily life. We advise that he cleans his own backyard before focusing on The Gambia, for charity begins at home.

Chidi Anselm Odinkalu is indeed one of those recalcitrant elements who are hellbent on destroying the image of the Gambian people, the prestige of the July 22 Revolution by utilizing slander and confusionist propaganda while clothing under human rights. This effort is part of nothing but a smear campaign against the decent record of a country that has gone down in the annals of history as the smiling coast of Africa. Such tactics can never work, as they are based on false and mere fabrications.

Chidi Anselm Odinkalu must realise that there is much he needs to learn. His comments are clear manifestation that he is either ignorant of the fact or blanantly distorting the fact. Whatever the case may be, human rights agencies must not give room to such type of persons to speak on their behalf as their actions can only condem the campaign for human rights to the dustbins of history. In fact, his compatriots are every day coming into The Gambia in search of a better place and are living in peace and harmony. If The Gambia is such a grave danger as he has potrayed it, this would have been true for his compatriots and human rights experts living in the country as well.

Vigorous denunciation of the anti-Gambia propaganda is therefore a necessity. Not of course because of any significance ascribable to Gambian people themselves, but because the relation their propaganda campaign has to the action of modern imperialism is going against the developing countries who are struggling to be independent, sovereign and developing using their available megre resources and because of the damage which, under the circumstances created by their confusionist campaign could cause in some incipient sector of our rising economy.
