Roots Festival starts 8th Annual International Roots Festival June 3rd - June 10, 2006 in The Gambia.
Roots 2006 commemorates the enforced enslavement and transportation of millions of Africans to the Americas and the Caribbean Islands.
A full week of activities are being organized and they include: 1) Visit places of historical, cultural, and educational interest such as Juffureh (The late Alex Haley's Ancestral Home), Fort James Island, Georgetown (now Janjanbureh), Kanilai (The President's Village for (Futampaf) rites of passage and celebration). 2) Establish cultural ties, attend international music concerts, cultural jamborees, visit a traditional African Batik Factory, craft markets, experience traditional African Cuisine, hair styles, fashion, jewelry, and witness traditional events. 3) The Roots Rock Reggae GamJam Concert 2006 will feature Rita Marley, Mrs. Cedella Booker-Marley, Kymani Marley, The Mother Marley Band, Everton Blendah, Jimmy B, Edi Fitzroy, Fire Passion, Culture Jamiel, Etana, Javaughn, Ricky Chaplin, Norman Espeut and local Gambian Artist. 4) International Sound systems will provide quality entertainment like Adonai Disco and Twin Star of Jamaica, Chris Goldfinger & the Asha World Crew and the Huhie Rose Crew of London, Qualitex Crew from Bristol, and Tingaling Crew from Birmingham.
