Shaka I will take your side on that,The issue is raised out of the NAM for Serekunda Central being unaware that the SHEIK has publicly declared his support for the coach to stay regardless of the financial cost, otherwise, I believed this question will never be raised in the national assembly. My only confusion of the whole issue is I am flabergasted by the misters remark that "THE PUBLIC MUST NOT KNOW THE COACHS SALARY" who is he serving then? If the national assembly members should agree with him to keep this important public issue secrete from the public, then they should all be voted out in the next election, be it APRC or any other opposition current member in the paliament,I am impressed with the remark of Sedia telling the minister that he must tell them. For the member of Serekunda central, may GOD save you from the SHEIK's angush. You will be lucky if you are not expelled from APRC, there by loosing your seat in the paliament and prompting a bi-election, as usual those are the sheiks strategies to dismiss a member of a paliament under Aprc ticket. |

Hon. Sidia Jatta, the National Assembly member for Wuli West, has branded as an insult to the dignity of the National Assembly, the comments made by Mr. Sheriff Gomez, the Minister for Youth and Sports, who was responding to a parliamentary question about the salary of the country’s senior national team Coach, Belgian Paul Put.
Youth and Sports Minister Gomez last Thursday told deputies at the National Assembly that the issue of the Coach’s salary should not be a subject of discussion at the Assembly. As he put it, it is personal to the Coach.
This, however, did not go down well with parliamentarians, and in his contribution to the motion on the adjournment debate on Monday, Hon. Jatta described the comment as “an insult to the integrity of the National Assembly”, stressing that the principles “must either be holy booked or holy sacrificed, but cannot be compromised”.
“Madam Speaker, the manner in which the Minister of Youth and Sport responded to the question concerning the salary of Coach Put is an insult to the dignity of the National Assembly. The principles must either be holy booked or holy sacrificed but cannot be compromised. What happens here the other day with the Minister of Youth and Sport is compromise of principles,” Hon. Jatta told the National Assembly members.
According to the Wuli West National Assembly member, “one would only cry if he/she knows who Coach Put is, his capabilities and how much he is paid”.
He then urged the Speaker of the House to tell the Minister to bring the information to the Assembly with urgency and without compromise.
He stated that “the Assembly is the mind of this republic and as such it rests on the members’ shoulders a big responsibility in ensuring that whatever is done is in the supreme interest of the people”. This responsibility, he added, should not and cannot be compromised.
“We have to make sure that whatever happens here is done in the supreme interest of our people. And we must come against anything that is not to the interest of our people”, he said, noting that “this is why they are representatives of people and whatever they say is more important than anything said in this republic”.
He said that’s why nobody can come to the Assembly and dictate them, as according to him, they are the mouthpieces of the people.
“No one can come here and dictate to us because we are the mouthpieces of the people; we are the minds of the people and that is why we have sworn that we will always stand and uphold the constitution of this republic. We must always bear that in mind because that is why we are called parliamentarians,” he concluded. Shaka, jealous, yes I want to go to janna too. It reminds me of the “indulgence document” priests in the middle ages sold to people as a passport to heaven. |

Sports Minister Under Fire Again By Saikou Jammeh
As the house reconvened on Monday, deputies are showing no sign of respite in their quest to know how much it is costing Gambians to sustain the services of Paul Put, the head Coach of the senior national football team. Thus the Minister of Youths and Sports, Mr. Sheriff Gomez has again come under fire for declining to disclose Coach’s salary to deputies who are still adamant on knowing it.
The member for Foni Bintang, Hon. Ebrima Jammeh drew an analogy that, “it was said here that to travel out of the country is a nightmare, but it is also a nightmare to have a minister who cannot tell us how much a Coach is paid. It’s amazing,” he complained, adding that the minister should have told them how much the foreign Coach Paul Put is paid for the sake of transparency and accountability.
Hon. Member for Wuli West Sedia Jatta also added his voice to the hullabaloo, charging that members have compromised their principles since they allowed the minister to leave the House without disclosing to them the Coach’s salary. He said the minister should not have left without telling them how much it is costing the country to maintain Coach Put’s services. “Principles must be wholly kept or wholly sacrificed, but cannot be compromised. It was wrong to compromise because it was an insult to the dignity of this assembly,” he told members with emphasis.
“Madam Speaker,” the opposition parliamentarian went on, “your office must tell the Minister to bring that information here now, urgently.” The Majority Leader who is also the member for Serre Kunda East, Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta also adding his voice said there is no information that cannot be disclosed to the National Assembly. Backing himself with the constitution he said even the President or any member of the Cabinet feels disclosing specific information to the public is not in the national interest, he or she is compelled to tell the Assembly.
“We are not saying he should go away,” he added referring to the concern raised by the member for Bakau who had sounded an alarm that they should not let the Coach go. “What we are saying is that we want his salary to be known to us. And we are urging him to immediately furnish us with the Coach’s salary”.
It could be recalled that members on Thursday had asked the Minister of Youths and Sports how much the coach is paid during ‘Question and Answer Session’ at parliament.
The Minister’s response was that the Coach’s salary was personal to him thus not meant for public discussion. NAMs however, insisted that the minister must tell them how much the Belgian football expatriate is paid. The minister then pledged to do so since they wanted it that way, noting however that it is not in the best interest of the nation.
However until last Tuesday Mr. Gomez failed to either turn up at the assembly or give members the information which they are bitter about. In a chat with another member, he disclosed to our reporter that the consequences of the Minister’s failure to disclose to them the Coach’s Salary could lead to writing a petition against him.

Wow this statement by the Minister is absolutely interesting. Revealing the salary of national coach Paul Put is "...not in the best interest of the nation"? What kind of salary is that? I think it is clear that both the Paul Put (the coach) and the Minister of sports should be fired. That will be in the interest of the nation... |
