Janjangbureh Identified As Kangkurang Center By The Gambia Journal

Janjanbureh has been identified as the site for the proposed Gambia Kangkurang Center. Kangkurang is Western Manding figurative art form that was in 2005 proclaimed by UNESCO as one of the masterpieces of the “oral and intangible heritage of humanity” as it is said to have fulfilled all the six criteria that the organization uses to select artistic, cultural or traditional forms of expressions that are declared as part of the global human heritage worth preserving. The Kangkurang art form is practiced in both The Gambia and Senegal, so under UNESCO initiative the two countries established steering committees for the organization’s Kangkurang Initiative. It is a joint meeting of the steering committees of the two countries that the Gambia National Centre for Arts and Culture and the Ministry of Culture and Tourism hosted on Thursday August 26th at the Baobab Hotel in Kerr Serigne. The meeting brought together experts and stakeholders from Senegal and the Gambia, aimed at discussing, among other things, about UNESCO Kangkurang initiative.
