Does July 22nd deserve to be called a revolution ? critics will say no it was the birth of a culture of coups instability and and self perpetuating rule in a country that was known to be the center for democracy and human rights. How believable is that? I don't have to remind anyone what the order of the day was during the Jawara regime ,I was a little guy at the time and the culture of corruption was deeply entrenched in our society and acceptable to a certain extent ,They use to say "HARRBI FORE KO TAKKA LAMO LEKaY". so everybody "they chop" to an extent that they forgot that children of the nation sent on missions overseas without payments or genuine explaination as to WHY they were not paid stood helplessly whilst Chongan and the gang were busy getting Drunk and hanging out with Gambia's Elite.
Looking back at the list of disgruntled soldiers ,Chances are non was from a prominent family and i will try to say this without actually saying what i really wanna say, so there you have .
Whether we were just politically immature is yet to be determined since the revolutions in general arose from inequalities, both numerical and qualitative from a mass claiming an equality denied to them ,The cause of the july 22nd revolution whether it was due to the financial instability at the time or just poor leadership, the PPP regime was a ticking time bomb waiting to explode ,who else gave us Ministers that did'nt go to school, when there were capable and competent Gambians , whether you blame Jawara or not the questions still remains ,since this was exactly what the majority wanted ,ask me who the majority is and i will tell you its almost 70 percent of Gambians who expected reps from their constituencies to maintain certain portfolios or else................
Am glad a lot of these powers have been taken and are now vested upon the president ,he decides who becomes what, when and how long ,just like a "Yalla bu Ndow" . It was the majority and their expectation and perception of what a Mansa ship was supposed to be like, which led to the demise of the PPP regime.
Every revolution ushers in some sort of change or a transformation of the old regime and the Aprc Regime did just exactly that,They replicated the PPP regime with the same ideology of governance or very similar and ended up succeeding where the PPP regime failed.
You can look back on you history and come to the realization that infact change is actually evident. The growth of the agricultural sector is unprecedented in our history unlike the jahally pacharr project, all of a sudden what seemed impossible and far fetched is at our finger tips. The attainment of self sufficiency has been the goal throughout but for some reason it was only a dream, Now we are even talking varities, higher yields and drought resistant crops.
The issues that are plaguing our society are being addressed on a daily basis and given the right political atmosphere, The reliability of this won't come to question. The priority placed on curbing the illeteracy rate and educating the female child whom never had a chance since fathers felt they were marriage material and were more focused on educating their male children, which led to the pedophilia tendency of Gambians and the culture of marrying children.
A country that could not provide stable electricity within city limits is now talking about electrifying the whole of Gambia from Point A to B. If July 22nd was not a revolution i don't know what was regardless of what the Sassa Borro's try to put across in their deceitful and sickening ways, Change came and when it did everyone was helpless and lost.
Am not gonna waste my time with infrastructural achievements and developments ,I will leave that to your imagination. Just remember that Gambia has a face now and no one has to convince you otherwise.
The introduction of the interstate system and at present the rail road plans proves beyond reasonable doubt that ,if not anything the ultimate goal is to turn Gambia into a force to reckon with ,we are at the door steps of industrialization, its just a matter of time...........................................................Peace

Moe Banana, hats off to you for a very impressive post. I'm a little busy right now, but i'll find time to point out the unpleasant dust that your storm/"revolution" brought to us. |
