The Gambia Daily Observer
3 Aspirants line up for kombo east seat Written by Lamin M Dibba Wednesday, 26 April 2006 The APRC, UDP/NRP and the Nadd have all selected their nominees for the forthcoming Kombo East Constituency by-election slated to take place on 13 May this year. The Daily Observer gathered that Alhagi Nfansu Jung Conteh, the ex-Chief of Kombo East, a native of Farabanta, is the APRC nominee. The other nominees are: Lamin Bondali Darboe, a native of Pirang, the UDP/NRP; and Momodou Lamin Touray, alias Chali, also a native of Pirang, the Nadd. The nomination takes place today Wednesday 26 April 2006 at the IEC office in Brikama.
The Kombo East seat became vacant following the death of Kebba M Touray who passed away in Havana, Cuba, on Wednesday 15.

Rainbow,
Personal opinion.
I personally couldn't agree with more on the headline. This is the test, "lambu"/wrestle. This is where people's spirit will begin to shrink, also where others will regain momentum. The good thing is the opposition will learn their lessons from it. What ever is happening in our country now is in favor of the opposition.
(i) For, if the APRC regains that seat, then they have a campaign tool to boast off, now against the october polls. That could be only possible, as a result of the divided factions.
(ii) If Nadd wins, as predicted by its flag bearer, Hon. Halifa Sallah, then that would attract the UDP/NRP coalition to realize that only with unity, we are able to win. It is my understanding from Hon. Salifa's speech that they were approached by the people of Kombo east, whether a Nadd or UDP/NRP candidate, but that they respected the will of the people.
(iii) If the UDP/NRP wins, then that would make them proud, and will embark on justifying their moves to abondon the coalition, which will not end of bringing them back as one.
Residents of Pirang i personally spoke with here are in agreement unanimously that ML Touray (Nadd's candidate) is a hot one-very famous, and he've been with the community for a long time. It won't be by accident or surprise that he[ML Touray] pull out the majority. Ex-chief of Faraba, (APRC's candidate), went through a lot fight, within the community, as such is not the choice of the people of kombo east, not even in his own Faraba. The guy called lamin Darboe is another choice, very active in politics, but observers say he cannot wrestle with ML Touray. Also, kombo east is a place where some families are catergorised as 'ruling' families like the Tourays, 'karanta-morro' family like the Sillahs, etc... That won't be my basis of analysis, but hopefully Yankuba Jambang, a native of the area will give me some more details later.

APRC's nominee is a societal menace
APRC candidate in Kombo east, Nfansu Jung Conteh, is no doubt, well confirmed that he is one with bad records. While he was the chief of the area, he was fired and brought to justice because of financial malpractices-he seriously blundered with properties belonging to the village projects. It is not even certain, as at now if his court appearances stopped. That again shows the level of retardness our society is reaching. These are people who want to remain in office, in as much as they have "mochad"/things to steal. Trust me, folks, APRC is disparate for a candidate. Information also unveils that he is one with the "divide and rule attitude". He created a lot of political differences in the area. HE, by all means, hooked his tentacles to the APRC- ‘come die, come live’, the similitude of Yanks.
What does it mean to any to invite such a menace in our society to a respected body like parliament? No wonder more bills will pass through parliament unscreened. Isn’t parliamentarians supposed to be scrutinized for their records-pla...we investigate, you digest !!

Hi everybody, Sorry for the long absence.I went down to the provence. You see while you focus on the net, we tour the country to gather votes for the people's party. I have just arrived and I said I must look in to what has happened arround the globe in my absence. In the provence, God save the Gambia, thousands of poor farmers and now speaking openly and I now get hope that APRC is loosing its grip on the soul of those poor people as the saying goes:"if you push the squerrel towards the wall too hard, it can really bite" Many farmers are crying they are fedup with Yankuba's lies that their problems are going to be things of the past, that since APRC came, famers nut has never been bought properly.First they blemed the former PPP,then they start accusing each other and now again they are pointing fingers at each other again always trying to fool them.Swaubou Touray said to them the ball is in their court and if they want to continue suffering under Jammeh, the choise is theirs and if they vote NADD into office and sees NADD also failing, they the people have the power to vote it out.He said if what Jammeh claims ( He is going to be president till maybe 2020) is true, they let they the farmers ask the question WHY THE ELECTION?He said to them that is not true as the president thinks the people are ignorant of their rights that is why.He cited Napal where there is a king not president but the people's was more than the king that he had to give in to the wishes of the people. We were in Pirang and Faraba too.I shall bring you those details too. But now I must rest. Stasungo |

| Good to hear from you Sitasungo. Keep up the good work on the ground. I have hope that every mess of this government is an arsenal for NADD to use. By November, APRC will be history. More boots on the ground and more education. |

Sitasunyo,
Welcome back, and we look forward to it. I hope Nadd is taking every opportunity, and utilizing the irresponsibility demonstrated by the disintegrating APRC administration to get the voters exercise their mandate, the right to be free and make a choice, as to who should lead them without forceful means. I am curious what the atmosphere looks like in Pirang- hit us up ! |

Hi bros/Sis, Well am back again, As we entered pirang, we were greeted with cheering and some were crying with sorrow for the loss of Kebba Touray and so many elders spoke up for the first time(according to them) in a rally. They said M.L. Touray is a respectful child and called opon Bondali Darboe to widrew his candidature so as to fight a common enemy. Many said so heartfelting stories that I cannot narrate on this forum about Jung Conteh, some of which include his day with the PPP and then when he retired and latter to become the Alkalo of Faraba. Some had it that He was behind the removal of the then young chief who succeed his late father Bakary Sanyang so that he could become the chief himself but when (late)Kebba was chosen, Nfansu remained at the bachground and he encouraged Kebba to stand for the MP ship so as to pave the way for him to become chief a post he badly wanted. When he got fired for corruption alledgations, he want nothing more than the high office...National assembly..Some elders said they want to teach him a lesson accusing him of being behind all the woes and waas in Kombo East. While other urged the opposition to do their best to come together as one to salvage the people. As according to them, their only hope of taking the seat from the APRC is with a united opposition front. They accuse some government officials includding Ministers, the commissioner(WD) and chiefs/Alkalolus who abuse their offices, treatened people, firing Alkalolus and using the police and the NIAs with the Army to put fear into people expacially the women and thus breed hatred amongst families. They vowed to do their best to keep the memory of Kebba's lagacy in trying to uniting the people of kombo East by voting his brother into the national assembly.Faraba was more interesting.I shall come with more. will tell youthat as soon as possible. Here is Foroyaa's article on the candidates. --------------------------
THREE CANDIDATES NOMINATED FOR KOMBO EAST BYE-ELECTION By Lamin Fatty & Sarjo Camara Singhateh
The three aspiring candidates contesting for the Kombo East bye-election were on Wednesday 26th of April, nominated at the Independent Electoral Commission Office in Brikama Administrative Area, after they were certified by the returning officer of the IEC, Mrs. Sarah Grey Johnson. Momodou Lamin Touray (alias Chalie) a native of Pirang was the first candidate to be nominated. He was nominated at 12:05 pm by the National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD). Mr. Alagie Nfansu B.K Konteh (alias Jung Konteh), a native of Faraba Banta and former Chief of Kombo East, was nominated at 2:15 pm by APRC and Lamin R. Darboe, also a native of Pirang Village in the Kombo East, was nominated at 3:15 by UDP. According to Mrs. Grey Johnson, all the applicants have successfully fulfilled the necessary requirements for nomination by the Independent Electoral Commission, which she said include the list of 300 electors, assets declaration, income tax clearance, party symbols and a cash deposit of D5000.00 Mrs. Grey Johnson explained the reason for the holding of the bye-election. “We are all aware of the demise of the former Kombo East National Assembly Member,” she said. The IEC is acting in accordance with section 91 subsections 3 of the constitution of The Gambia 1997 and section 84 of the Electoral Degree 1996. The IEC notified the general public, stake holders and interested persons of the death of the late Kebba Touray, and said that nomination would take place on the 26th of April, and Election is to be held on the 14 of May 2006. Speaking to reporters shortly after the nomination, Momodou Lamin Touray said he was born in Pirang; that he is 50 years old and is a graduate of St. Augustine’s High School. He said he worked for the defunct cooperative union, where he had a lot of inservice training and later travelled to the UK, but returned to contribute towards the development of The Gambia. He stated that he is sponsored by NADD, and that the party has an MOU and a manifesto which would guide him, if elected. He promised to contribute positively in the National Assembly to ensure the empowerment of The Gambian people, if elected into office. He said his party is for Gambians who want change for the betterment of The Gambia. For his part Mr. Konteh said that his party will come victorious, stating that the crowd is an indication of his popularity. He pointed out that the people of Kombo East have crowd and confidence in him. He said he was born on the 10th of August 1943 and since then he has been working with his people. He said he was an Alkalo for 8 years in Farabanta and Chief of Kombo East for many years. He said even though his highest educational attainment is standard 7 he was able to teach for 7 years. He pointed out that the National Assembly Member, Khalifa Kambi and the Secretary of state of Local Government and Lands Ismaila Sambou were among the students he taught in school. When asked whether he will join those National Assembly Members in changing the constitution to suit the Executive, he said “Yes” noting that the constitution is flexible, therefore it can always be changed to suit the needs of the people. He further said that his priority will be his President’s priority because his President said he believes in God and therefore his “treasury” lies in the hands of God. He said if he is elected in office, he will not enrich himself, he will rather stick to the interest of his people. He said the whole of Kombo East is rallying behind him, stating that even the kids and the animals know who Nfansu Jung Konteh is. The last candidate to be nominated, Mr. Lamin R. Darboe of UDP, said he was born on the 26th of August 1968 in Pirang. He pointed out that his highest qualification is primary teacher’s certificate which he received from The Gambia College and that he taught for 15 years. He said, “It was never our intention to gather at the IEC office, but because we lost a brother and colleague, that was why the bye- election must be held.” He said death is inevitable since everybody will die sooner or later. He said he does not see Lawyer Darboe, but The Gambia, and according to him, he works in the best interest of the people. He said he has the chance of winning the election because the people of Kombo East have built trust and confidence in him and that that was why he was nominated to contest. He said whether he will deliver or not, will be proved when he is elected in office. He said if he is elected in office, his first priority among other things is to forster unity and love within the people of Kombo East, stating that Kombo East has a lot of problems that need to be addressed. He cited the poor condition of the road which in his view should be repaired. He also expressed disapproval of trouble. The occasion was graced by the supporters of all the three political parties contesting for the bye election.

Is the Touray standing for election related to the Touray that died? Are they true 'brothers'? |

Hi guys, Here I am again, well there is a drama unfolding here. Some peolpe are alledging that as many as twenty to thirty richmen amd women are roaming the towns and villages at nights buying votes at D500. per vote. One ousman sanno is believed to have led a group of green boys into the towns vying people to either vote Jung Conteh of if they don't and he(jung)looses some people will never see the sun with their eyes again. This was brought to the notice of some officials of the IEC but we all know the IEC IS JUST A TOOTHLESS BULL DOG.What can they do?If this was an opposition, that person will not be arround till maybe God knows. I have a belief that Gambians have given into Jammeh's brutality and majority of those who call themselves faithful muslims and christians are just hypocrete and they shall ROT in the bottomless HELL.How can one belief in GOD and at the same time you fear a fellow humanbeeing more than you fear God and yet you pretend to worship that God?Do you think HE will listen to you?No wonder we have poverty at a massive scale and it will increase and increase and increase until we see all our sisters prostituting to live, men leaving their wives and childreen due to poverty and stress and many die at an early age.Do you see most your age groups here tend to look older thatn those of you in Babylon?Stress,Stress,Stress, stress and stress. There are strong indications that Jung Conteh this byelection will win at all cost.Belief it or not.I know because I see things everyday and every night.Paras, Armies, NIAs ect ect are day and night intimidating people He has always wanted this post since during Kebba Touray(R.I.P) days and He will do anything to get it.We are fighting a lost battle because the condition these people (Kombo East people) are seing themselves is so pertetic and sad.The government is giving then no space of breath and they are soffocating. If NADD or UDP could show those people that they are their strength but even we are sometimes advised by our own families not to go to opposition rallies as there might be violence.People have completely lost faith in God or any thing they just belief what they see.....POWERFUL JAMMEH who cannot be removed by anybody.I think some think Jammeh is more powerful than George Bush Aand Tony blair put together. I swear this is what some think and still do.Ignorance, poverty, faithlessness and not willing to be redeamed. Has the super powers not once thought of us?Someone should please come to our aid.Because I told you Gambians abroad to help but you feal your families would be intimidated so you are afraid.Kombo East is already APRC I tell you all because it will never be fair and nothing will come out of it. I don’t think we need super powers. Gambia is a sovereign nation and as such we have to save ourselves. There is no free lunch and because we are poor no one will put his or her sons and daughters in harms way.
We have to put ourselves in harms way to change our state of affairs. I have for a long time supported civil disobedience of some sort. Hey let Junkung bring it on. We have to pay a price and until then, bro, many more will go six feet deep as he has always told us and is doing it. Junkung has never failed in his promise to get rid of his non-supporters.
Therefore we are better of dying while trying than to go six feet deep for not doing anything. The ball is in our court.

| We have been hearing General Idi Amin Daada, Mobutu and Sergeant Doe and I never thought that Gambia would have a similar despot like them. The way the political situation is going appears to show us clear signs that if Jammeh is not deposed there would be a serious civil crises in the making. No one is indispensable and just couple of months Mauritania did the job no one expected them to do. He was the first Head of state to stand by their side and endorse the new leaders. Gambia cannot be an exception under these current developments. Don't rule out worst things happenning also. A lot of options are open as the stakes are high in Gambian politics. Democracy must be seen to work as people are feeling the pinch! |
