On average, 80 million Americans watched each of the last seven episodes. Almost half of the US population, 100 million viewers, saw the finale, which still claims one of the highest Nielsen ratings ever recorded. A stunning 85% of all US television homes saw all or part of Roots.
The memorial service for late pop legend Michael Jackson is thought to have been watched by over a billion people worldwide. The TV coverage in the US alone drew nearly 31 million viewers.
The venue, the Staples Center sports arena in Los Angeles, was emotionally-charged as Michael Jackson's body, in a golden coffin, took centre stage. In global terms, it was one of the biggest celebrity send-offs of all time.

Funeral of Diana, Prince of Wales - I remember it like it was yesterday; the tragic death of Princess Diana resulted in an outpouring of grief never before seen in the UK. It's estimated that a total of 2.5 billion people around the world watched her funeral, a real testament to the global celebrity of the people's princess.
