I've been branded
With the Royal African Company's seal
They came to Africa
And stole me from the fields!

I've been branded
As a slave to whip
To ship across the Atlantic
Forced to work from the cradle
To the grave
I'm stranded!

I've been branded
As a school drop out
Locked up in prison
Not free to roam about
I remain stranded!

I've been branded
As a stereotype
A Mental Health patient
I refuse to accept the hype
Still stranded!

I've been branded
With a tattoo on my back
But still I refuse fall
Into Babylon's trap!

No, I'm not a commodity
I reject Mental slavery
I am a Human Being first
One who has been blessed
And not cursed!

No you can't brand me
I'm not stranded
Because I know my worth
I am a child of Mother Earth
I'm proud and aware
of my African Ancestry

I holistically
embrace my Identity
I have the power
to shape my own destiny
No longer branded

I'm free
to shape a new reality
unleashing an abundance
of creativity
To find solutions
and dispel illusions.

Readdressing
the distortion
Of African Company.

Africa's people
and physical resources
Will liberate our continent
From economic
slavery!

once again Sister O delivers a great poem, the line mental health patient or school drop out is so relevant in today's society. it gave me much to think about.

I am pleased about that, what baffles me is that she/he failed to acknowledge that it was his/her work, unless of course I should have instantly recognised that Sophia Sewell-Njie was a recognised name under which the author wrote.

Thanks Guys I'm glad you liked this poem. It's the first time I shared it with an audience. I first wrote it in 2007 and revised it last night adding the last five verses, when i posted onto the site last night. So have I answered your question Toubab1020 and for the record I am female. Jambo, yes its a sad situation exspecially what is ocurring in the UK amongst the African Diaspora. Who are over represented in Mental hospitals and prisons not to mention permenant exclusions amongstr teenages drifting into gang culture including gun and knife crime. kaanibaa I see you have been busy writing your poems keep uop the good work.

Peace

Sister Omega.

Well sister thats OK then, but I suspect that you know and I know that there are posters here who have names that are confusing,to say the least, anyway good poem and as Kaan. says, when the urge comes you just must write whatever comes into your head,I am no poet so I cannot really understand that. The other stuff you talk about, forget that and enjoy your life you cannot heal everybody in this sad world.

Sad but true. However there are lots of people who try too. "Heal the world make it a better place..." I hear a Michael Jackson tune coming on.
