CONGRATS TO THE ENTIRE INDEPENDENT

On behalf of the entire Gainako staffers, we take this opportunity to congratulate the entire Independent team, for the freedom regained by MD Madi Ceesay and Editor Saidy Khan. We, at Gainako, are very delighted that the Independent is starting operations today, and we welcome them back with a red carpet. We also congratulate all the fans of the Independent, more so the Point Newspaper and Foroyya for their notable steadfastness, and being openly critical against the move to close the Independent, and detain its staffers more than 72 hours, without charging them in a court of law, pursuant to the Gambian constitution.

The Independent is once more victorious, coming a long way to survive attacks of all sorts-burning down, closure, arbitrary arrests, intimidation, and threats. This latest victory proves to all that the voices of decent cannot be silenced. The Independent must continue to enlighten the world, particularly Gambians. The paper’s editorial independence policy must not be altered a bit.

Mr. Ceesay, Mr. Saidy khan and their entire team might have noticed this was not only a trying moment for the Independent staffers, but the fans and associates as well. The paper has been a place for research, and its reliance and independence is well noted throughout the world. Such a great educational research newspaper cannot be banned by such a monarchical administration, and haters of freedom. It is only visible now, that the Government’s intention was clear, that is to use scare tactics, torture and intimidation to silent the Gambian media. Once again, their shameful acts and unwise games are unveiled, while Gambians point fingers at the tyrannical administration for being lying prophets and monsters within a decent citizenry.

We, at Gainako, hailed the faith demonstrated by Mr. Ceesay, and Saidy Khan. We also openly call on other active groups, and democratic Governments to condemn and mount pressure on the tyrannical administration of Yaya Jammeh to release the third independent journalist lingering in mile two. It is only human to be human. We know that the language of the donkey is a whip, therefore call on all activists to use the whip on a tyrant who openly declares a war against his countrymen, without any just cause. We know that if they should deal with the Independent on a Wednesday night, then they won’t hesitate to deal with the point on a Friday morning. We are very vigilant, and we will continue to signal Governments, and other organizations like the UN, AU etc… to realize the level of terror created by Jammeh, a desperate tyrant.

Our advice to the police and the entire protective force is to avoid being used as tools. Their job is clear, and that is only to protect the people of our nation. The recent maltreatment of top military men, and past executions is enough to go by. These are all facts on the ground, and not fictions. We hope, as we journey in the media fraternity, we will engage all of them in this renown struggle, so that they maintain their state duties, and not to be recruited for terrorizing the people of our nation.

We once more renew our love for the Independent, and reassure them of togetherness in this struggle. To the infamous cowards, we warn you to take heed, even though it is late already. Jammeh’s best friend Taylor recently got his share of the cake, and we ask Jammeh if he is not awakened by recent developments of booting him out of the palace by all means necessary, because he is the very threat to peace and stability. A similitude of Taylor’s episode is on its way for him, and nothing will stop it. We will continue to expose his injustices more, and liaise with the solid powers to prepare a case file for Jammeh and his entire administration to be tried at the international court of justice, just like was done with Taylor, the coward that wanted to escape justice after the order of his arrest was given.

We humbly implore on Almighty God to continually look after the Independent media and all other media fraternities.

Long live the Independent and all other media fraternities!!

Yero Jallow, Associate & Editor
On behalf of GON.

THANKS OB1. Gambia is highly unpredicatable. The changes are so fast that one is right in a munite and then wrong within a second. This is one example but it is a daily occurence.

I have seen Junkung change his decisions 5 times on one issue within eight hours. His decision life cycle is 6 hours and will change again. Never say never in Junkungs Kingdom. Take every decsion he makes with face value. There are times when two people are appointed to the same position beacsue he had fired and re-instated and hired again forgetting that he had re-instated. This happened with Jagana and one gentleman from Works. They all showed up in the morning at Ports Authority both with letters of Apointment as Director General.

They had to call state house to rescind one. Gambia is a nightmare. We have a long way to go. Eventually the man from works was hired again and Jagana dismissed. The man from works is now also fired. Another is fired and another and now another is in office all withing 2 1/2 years. No continuity and institutional memory in place. No handing overs. nothing.

this is worrying, will the journalists seek to have legal redress against their arrests!?!? freedom of speech in a democratic country, I do not think so.

Jambo,

That's the way it is supposed to be in a place where the country's constitution is relied on. Fighting with the state is a tough battle.

(i) Look at the Mayor of Banjul, he is still being vindicated from one end, and getting into deeper **** into other ends. I wonder how much of it is true. A friend of the mayor told me, all this erupted when he was invited by Jammeh to support the APRC/or attend rallies in Banjul, which he vowed not to do.

(ii) You might know Sabally, from Saint Augustines. He was one victim of this regime's brutality during out student demo, april 2000. With the help of his lawyer, and wife, Awa ceesay-sabally, he pursued the case to the last minute, and he won, the case ended up getting settled out of court, after Government's many failed appeals.

The point i am tyring to eloborate on here is that, the law is not the tool for actions here. The law is there in papers, not in action. If you want to exhaust the law for your rights, they will break your coconut head, and make a running stream out of it.
-ain't they dropping Dibba's case now after he showed alliengence to Jammeh openly on tv ?
-Didn't they reinstate Musa Jammeh, and the others ?
-How about Kaba Bajo, went at first he was accused of land malpractices ?
-How about Boy-Yanks, isn;t he the griot we've known then and now ?

We are at a heightened stage of Jammeh's paranoa. One would have expected that if Dibba was not involved in this case, he will sue them and set an example for others to follow.

Dalton1, as I have been saying all along. Jammeh will silence anyone that he sees as a threat (meaning someone that will refuse to accept his lies, and trickery). Have you noticed, that the only people he calls patriots are: the Effery Mbyes, the FJC's,the Bala Jahumpa's. We all know who these people are....Patriots they are NOT! They are everything else though. Look at Citizen FM, has it opened since (even though the courts have said that it could)? What about Sud FM? Did you know that there is a FREEZE on newspaper registration in the country? And that the fee for registration renewal is D500,000? Up five fold. And this only applies to the PRIVATE media. Why do you think that is? Jammeh only wants to be praised. he is anti democracy and therefore anit progress. he has shown this in his 14 years in power. Everyone has become poorer, except him his pals and his family and family's pals.

Jammeh's actions are much more serious than any abjective we can use here. The only way I can describe him is someone who have no sense of direction. This is a man who found himself heading something he has no clue what to do or say. He make decisions not with the brain but the tongue. He acts like a homeless person who wakes up in the morning not knowing where to go or what to do but just wonder around. He is living a miserable life. A life without trust or peace of mind. May the lord help guide his soule.

Could anyone imagine making so many absord decisions. Sometimes, I blame the people around him. It is impossible for anyone person to make daily decisions of arresting and intimidating all these innocent citizens. The tugs are around him and these are our own brothers sadly.
