Hakalang the route to Juffureh
Dusty gravel paved your way
But that was then
Now I hear you have gold dotting your sides
Whilst diamonds smile as garlands
Round your slim waist
Gone are those dark days
That saw Kunta leave your shores
For a distant land never to return

Happy folks now walk the sandy beach
Waiting for the fisherman's return
To share the catch and make fries for dinner
Toubabs with burned skins grace the shows
That are for them made a treat
Sitting not around burning log fires
But under electric lamp posts
Showing a move on from darkness to proper light
No more smoke from the burning embers
To drive away the stubborn gnat and mosquito too
Which stuff themselves with blood of the locals
And of the sweeter Toubabs too
Making them suffer malaria as party presents
The mighty gnat and mosquito have to survive
It being unfair to deny them a meal

Hakalang dusty road to Juffureh
How I miss your beautiful twisted form
Zigzag bends and curves on the calm river bank
Beckoning visitors to that forlorn island beyond
Where captive slaves got sent to disappear
Now haven to pleasure seekers
Who stay for a while to feed the mosquitoes
Or eat the fresh fish cooked on the river bank
Would I recognize your old beauty
Perhaps not but happy am I for your new face
What cannot change for me
Is the peaceful nature of the locals
Who deserve to be happy for ever

I like this, very pictorial and calm of days gone by , and days now, and of course "And of the sweeter Toubabs too" OK.. OK... I know its out of context and it relates to the biting of the mosquitoes but couldn't resist a quote. Yes another one for the book,yep..... you are busy now

"Simple is good" & I strongly dislike politics. You cannot defend the indefensible.
