Halifa Salah: PDOIS is however realistic. It is fully aware that the Gambian voters are yet to reach a level of political consciousness that they rely on to vote on the basis of Principles, policies and programmes and practices.

I think there is more she can gain being in Parliament without a scarf than to resign and leave her consituency unrepresented.

She has to understand that her host society is not an islamic society and as such she must slowly intriduce them to the religion and over time, scarfs will not be an issue. There is no compulsion in religion.

I did not understand. I think she was allowed to be in the parliement with scarf. I have seen her on TV the other day in the parliement. Why does she have to be in parliement without scarf? Or why does she resign? Belgian voters already happy with her being with scarf as they voted for her. Scarf is a personal choice.

And host society not being an Islamic society does not mean anything if they are truly secular. Her religious dress code should not be an issue in a true secular society. But if you are talking about France (burqa debate), that is another story.

What political system do they have in Belgium?

...Gambian by birth, Muslim by the grace of Allah...

The link is saying that wearing a scarf in parliament is illegal. I was responding to what is written in the link than the posting itself. Sorry i was not being very clear.

Like i said, if it is illegal to wear sacrf in parliamne t, she should not resign. She is better off representing her religion in the corridors of power than stay out. Secondly, her presence in parliament could educate others and over time, lead to acceptance.
