Below is a translation of an article by Senegalese critic and journalist, Souleymane Jules Diop.
This will be me, he thought, a wonderful professor of brutalisation. With this imbecile, i will reach out to degrade him.François Mauriac
You may say that war is good. But Karim Wade did not show any restraint when it comes to his many ministerial posts. Since last week, I wonder if he can feel ashamed. To shield himself with the aura of a prophet in front of both departments, he must be devoid of any sense of sin. The scathing beating of 22 March is not that far off, but the son of the President of the Republic behaves as if he was crowned sacred commander of the believers on that day. What the Senegalese denied him in the ballot boxes, Karim Wade assumes them in the ministerial cabinets. He had already assumed the protocol rank of Minister of Finance to prove it. And to constitute his cabinet, he called up the public enemy number one to Abdoulaye Diop, the notorious Boubacar Camara. He now intends to trim the powers hitherto reserved for the Minister of Finance. The son of the head of state is already Minister of Infrastructures, Regional Planning, Air Transport and International Cooperation. So far, anyone would have stopped for fear of descending into the ridiculous. But the list is growing again with the function of responsibility for countries of Asia and the Middle East, where his reign extends into the royal palaces of the most remote. Abdoulaye Diop, unwittingly, is reduced to the inglorious status of government accounting officer. Cheikh Tidiane Gadio, who had already expressed his frustration at the OIC(Organisation of the Islamic Conference) summit, is also returned to his first love. He is an organizer of events and carrier of baggages, nothing more.
The only one who had taken any financial responsibilities since the formation of the government, either to create a new airline or to decide the fate of workers at Air Senegal, is Karim Wade, himself. No government minister could make any decisions which financially commit the State on his own without the authorizing of expenditure by the Minister of Finance. But can you give orders to the client? With a frenzy which cannot be equated, the son of the president of the Republic “regulates the problems.” It is as if the "problems" were waiting for him to settle themselves. He is so quick with his magic wand that the workers of ASI(Air Senegal International) find it "attractive." He makes them understand that they have no rights, but he will give them rights, that they should not be paid, but he will pay them. Faced with so much goodness, even the prisoners of war will take care not to escape. I do find him to be , for my part, no genius who deserves to be worshipped at his feet as do people from all walks of life. But a worker of ASI said flatly that he had the size, color and all the physical traits of the "prophet". His staff had also made the same mystical observations to journalists interviewing their "prophet" on the eve of local elections, but that was before his memorable defeat. The man maintains the mystery on his person by a series disappearing acts and silences. In the cabinet of ministers, one sees only his shadow move. In his ministries, he appointed a spokesperson to speak on his behalf.
It is that failure to convince, that seduced Karim Wade himself. It would need convincing arguments supported by logical discourse, which is too much trouble for his level of responsibility. But where was the financial advisor Abdoulaye Wade when the airline was heading for disaster? If he was so imbued with the nationalist sentiment, why fly in a private jet instead of traveling with ASI? So far, no worker can honestly say with precision where the son of the President of the Republic takes off to in his aircraft during his many travels. Remember, it happened that the father, mother and the son end up on the same day in Dakar in three different aircraft.Upon inquiry, they all had things "to do" in their respective planes and did not want to be disturbed. The president alone owed 9 billion CFA francs to Air Senegal International, that he requisitioned when he wanted to surround himself with felons responsible for his applause.
Many analysts had struggled to understand the 'ministerisation' of ANOCI(National Agency for the OIC). Karim Wade already represented his father with many Heads of State. He had already improvised the formulation of the Senegalese nuclear power to Nicolas Sarkozy. He has been the negotiator of numerous funding from Arab countries. But it will be a mistake to think that this is a simple confirmation. His responsibilities go far beyond. He used to get a letter of recommendation from his father for some royal courts. He no longer need this approval. He needed the Minister of Finance to sign certain agreements. He can now act alone.
What makes Karim Wade particularly dangerous, is less the vastness of his powers than his aversion to all those who can stand up to him. It was believed that his friendship with Abdoulaye Baldé can withstand any test. Once the Secretary General of the Presidency of the Republic began to say no, hell opened under his feet. His chief of staff and member of the Génération du concret(Karim's unofficial party) was charged with trafficking in visas and expelled from the presidency. Innocence NTAP, introduced to PDS by the same Abdoulaye Baldé, was made Minister of State in the very Council of Ministers. With all these maneuvers to destabilize failing, "the friend" Baldé hoped, following his victory in Ziguinchor, to land a major ministerial post. But it was without taking into account the determination of Abdoulaye Wade. After the local elections, the president of the Republic had decided to replace him with Ousmane Masseck Ndiaye, another loser from Saint-Louis. To punish Baldé for his victory and to reward Karim Wade for his defeat, the president of the Republic sought his audience: “The bottom line is, I saw you two get along well, and you can be a good Principal private secretary for Karim”. The former Secretary General of the Presidency refused to be humiliated and simply decides to return to care for his Zinguinchor town hall. Abdoulaye Wade let it be to avoid any scandal, but Abdoulaye Baldé knows the fate that awaits him now. The same experienced was meted to all those who, because they refused to submit, were treated as enemies. The opposition mistakenly believes that all this is just domestic dispute. Therefore if we are not careful, Karim Wade have only one obstacle to his ambition, that is his own stupidity.
