Internet proposed for school exams Published 19.05.09
Use of the internet has become so commonplace that the Education Ministry is considering using it for school exams within a couple of years.
All the answers will be at students’ fingertips for their final exams if the Education Ministry goes ahead with plans to allow internet use during secondary school exams, reports Berlingske Tidende newspaper.
The ministry believes that moving with the times is a necessity, and that strengthening students’ IT abilities must be part of a well-rounded education. The ministry is now halfway through a two year trial at 13 schools; with the first evaluation report showing positive results.
‘It’s only a question of setting up the exam so it isn’t possible to cheat,’ said Gorm Leschly, head of the secondary school teachers’ association. ‘We use the internet in our teaching, so this project is good for being able to integrate it into our future exams.’
But cheating even in the project’s current form is not especially easy, according to students who have taken their exams using the internet.
‘It takes time to get a hand on all the data you find on the internet,’ said one student. ‘For example, I got over 2,000 hits when I googled a certain poem and the author’s name. It can probably be confusing for some students, who might just use the first information that pops up.’
Students are also given a very short time to sift through the data they find on the internet in the project. Getting students to master sorting information is one of the project’s goals.
‘The students have to learn to sort according to the quality of information found on the internet,’ said Keld Larsen, headmaster at Århus State High School, one of the 13 project participants.
‘Generally, our students feel at home using the internet, but they always need to upgrade their performances in certain subjects,’ said Larsen. ‘That’s why we need to upgrade the exam so that it reflects current needs.’
A total of 4 million kroner has been allocated to the project, and the final recommendation as to whether it should be implemented in all schools nationwide is expected sometime in 2011.
